Sister Deborah. - Season 1 - Episode 28

Something astonishing happened like a movie flashing before our very eyes.

A black Sienna jeep halted directly before Annabel and her motorcyclistʼs vehicle, and somebody’s hand showed from the jeep’s glass frame signalling and making gestures for Annabel to hop in. Annabel’s motorcyclist halted beside the jeep, while she hastily stepped down from the motorcycle, opened the door of the jeep and quickly hopped inside.

The black Sienna jeep sped off immediately, taking another route, while Annabel’s motorcyclist zoomed off as well straightforward.

Sergeant Bernard and I still retained our pursuit from afar. We took the same route which the Sienna jeep had crossed — which happened to be a narrow road with pot-holes and gallops, coupled with mud, gutters and thick bushes all around the surroundings.

All of a sudden, the Sienna jeep stopped moving on itʼs own accord. The sergeant and I were too close to their vehicle. Sergeant Bernard quickly tapped me to take cover by the trees, while he took out his pistol from his vest. He fired a loud, deafening shot.

His first shot was aimed at deflating their vehicleʼs tyre, thereafter, he fired another shot in the air to serve as a warning.

“All of you in that vehicle, step out one by one; your hands in the air before I count to three.” The sergeant warned viciously.

“One,” he started counting, using his fingers for emphasis. Regardless of the sergeant’s threats, the unknown individuals in the vehicle refused to come out.

“Two—” The sergeant continued, cocking his pistol to signify his seriousness.

“Three!” The sergeant concluded, pointing his pistol at the vehicle’s glass frame.
Then, like the deafening sound of a trumpet, a loud gun-shot boomed from the culprits’ vehicle. Sergeant Bernard groaned loudly and fell to the ground, panting. He had been shot instead on his left leg.

Hurriedly, I leaped out from the tree where I had taken cover, and rushed to the sergeant to aid him to his feet. I knelt beside him, trying to assist him to stand upright when — before I knew it — a thick metallic object brushed my hair from behind.

“No even try am.” A broad masculine voice cautioned behind me.

“Shift away from him,” A lady’s voice ordered, “and raise your hands up.”

I obeyed her out of caution and for my safety. Frightened, I glanced behind me and faced the lady wearing dark shades, a dark jacket with a hood over her head and a face-cap. There were two men behind me as well, both armed. I was still on my knees, with my hands raised up. The lady took off her glasses with an avid but stern stare at me.

“Annabel, why are you doing this?”
“Neche, it’s due to the love I have for you that will make me spare you this time around. Tell your escorts or whatever to stop trailing us. I hope this teaches you a vital lesson.” She stated bluntly, and then snapped her fingers afterwards.

A loud gunshot followed suit immediately. One of the armed men behind me shot sergeant Bernard’s wounded leg again, making him groan loudly with immense pain. The other armed man concluded it by aiming straight at the sergeant’s chest. He killed him ruthlessly.

I screamed at the close rate of proximity between I and the sergeant’s lifeless body. His blood spilled all over my body and my clothes.

“Stop following us, be warned!” Annabel cautioned again, snapping her fingers to the armed men to signify their departure.

“Annabel, how can you be so heartless?”
She ignored me and kept on moving with the armed men. I couldn’t allow them escape so easily. I picked up the late sergeant’s pistol from the ground, attempting to aim at one of the armed men but before I knew it — a sharp pain pierced through my arm, precisely around my shoulder region. I fell flat to the ground, groaning in pain. I had been shot by my right arm.

“She warned you, didn’t she?” One of the armed guys barked angrily, pointing his pistol to my head.

“Leave him alone, Jubril.” Annabel ordered. “Let’s leave here.”
“I must waste this fool.” Jubril persisted, cocking his pistol at me.

I closed my eyes slowly, expecting my ill-fated death.

“Hold it!”
We were all jolted by the sudden baritone voice from nowhere. A group of police-men had arrived at the scene, all armed. I could spot out Chief Etomi and Mr. Fabian among them.

“Drop your weapons! Your hands in the air!”

Annabel’s accomplice pointing the pistol at me disregarded the order. He sought to take to his heels instead, attempting a narrow escape. One precise shot at his leg sent him stumbling to the ground with a loud m0an.

Reluctantly, Annabel and her other accomplice surrendered to the police. Chief Etomi, Fabian and some officers rushed to my aid. My shoulder bled profusely.

Despite the immense pain I felt, I still managed to take one last look at Annabel’s horrified face. She returned a stern glare back at me. Alas, the repercussions of her atrocities eventually caught up with her in a bitter-sweet cycle.

Nemesis, indeed, had been fulfilled.
