Susan ekerete - Season 1 - Episode 9

inside Susan Ekerette’s small house, raised voices shook the walls as the irate mother tried to attack her ex-husband for going beyond his legal boundaries.Michael held on to Susan’s straining body as she raged at Asuquo, torn between amusement and genuine worry. He winced a few times as her nails grazed the arm hekept wrapped around her midsection, but he held on. The woman’s body was coiled in fury; if he let her go, she could very well cause some injury to her husband. He looked over Susan’s head at Asuquo, who after taking a few hasty steps back, was smiling smugly with his hands in his pockets as he responded to Susan’s shouts. Before Michael had gripped the woman, he had seen a look of fear on the man’s face that amused him. It was apparent that the man was used to being the one doing the threatening in their prior relationship. Michael was almost tempted to let Susan go, just to see what happened, but he tamped down on his amusement and held on.Just as suddenly as she had started, Susan stopped. She went limp in Michael’s arms and covered her face with her palms.“How could you do that, Asuquo?” she asked in a voice that sounded tired. All her anger seemed to have left her body as she leaned back against Michael. He took a step back in surprise as her weight settled against him, then cradled her shoulders gently. “How could you take Cherish away like that?”Michael watched as Asuquo took in the sight of Susan leaning against another male body. He wasn’t surprised to see anger in the man’s face.“If you’re done raging like a madwoman, we can finally have a civil conversation.” Asuquo snapped. “And can you please detach yourself from your boyfriend for a minute?”Susan looked confused for a moment, then turned her head and looked back at Michael. She straightened up and moved away. A feeling of regret washed through him. She had felt good pressed against him. Soft and womanly, and oddly familiar, like she was meant to be in his arms. Susan’s next words burst his bubble.“He’s not my boyfriend.” She blurted, and then added defiantly. “Not that it’s any of your business.”“I don’t really care anyway.” Asuquo lied badly, his face saying otherwise. “And stop accusing me of taking Cherish away. She’s right there in her room! All I did was pick my daughter up from school…”“Without my permission? Why would you think that was okay? After our fight this morning?” Susan snapped.Michael frowned and touched Susan’s shoulder protectively. “Fight? Susan are you okay?”“I’m fine.” She said, shrugging his arm off impatiently, before she threw a suspicious look at him. “It was a quarrel at work, a loud one. And what are YOU doing here?”Michael raised his eyebrows at her tone. Itwas his turn to slide his hands into his pockets and keep his face blank to hide his emotions. “I saw Mr Asuquo Udodiong here trying to convince Miss Adesina that he could take Cherish home. I noticed the teacher was a bit hesitant to agree, but worried about offending the girl’s father, so I offered to drive behind him and make sure Cherish got home. When I saw you weren’t here, I insisted on coming in to wait till you returned.”Susan was stunned. She was sure there was a possibility that if Michael had not followed Asuquo, he could have just drivenoff with their daughter. She owed her daughter’s maths tutor a debt of gratitude for his quick thinking, and so far she had not been very courteous. Shame filled her as she stepped forward and clasped his hands.“Thank you, Michael.” She said, looking upinto his face, so he could see the genuine gratitude in her eyes.

“I can never thank you enough.”Surprised, Michael nodded, his eyes helplessly drawn to her luscious lips. It took an almost physical effort not to lean forward and press his mouth against hers.He shook himself. That kind of move would earn him a slap at least. And he would deserve it.“Thank him for what?” Asuquo broke the silence, rolling his eyes. “Are you implying I was planning to kidnap Cherish and he stopped me?”Susan glared at her ex-husband. “Well, I don’t know. Were you?”“Kidnap my own daughter? What do you take me for?”Susan took a furious step towards Asuquo, gratified to see him flinch. “I take you for a spineless bully who would go to any lengths to get his way, kidnap being one of them. Don’t come near my daughter without my permission anymore,Asuquo, or I swear I will kill you.”Asuquo scoffed at the same time a polite cough came from the doorway. They all turned to see Nancy, Susan’s pregnant neighbour, peering around the door.“Sorry to interrupt. I heard some shouting and just wanted to know if everyone was okay…”She abruptly stopped talking as Asuquo stalked towards the door. The pregnant woman managed to move aside in time ashe pushed past her rudely. Susan and Michael followed, stopping at the doorwayas her ex-husband paused beside his jeep. Two curious neighbours, strolling past to their own houses, slowed their steps as they noticed the tension in the air.Asuquo pulled open his car door and glared back at Susan, his face distorted bythe petulant anger she had spent years trying to forget.“Maybe it’s time we revisited this custody issue.” Asuquo’s eyes moved to Michael and his lips pursed in disapproval. “I’m not comfortable with strange men hanging around my daughter and my ex-wife dressing so provocatively and setting a bad example.”Nancy gasped, eyes widening at Asuquo’s words. The two neighbours stopped walking altogether and stared.

Michael took an angry step forward, but Susan held him back with an outstretched arm.“To hell with you and your accusations, Asuquo.” Susan said bitterly. “Keep your poison away from me and my daughter.”Asuquo snorted derisively and entered his car. “She’s my daughter too.” He retorted, leaning out his window and piercing Susan’s heart with fear with his next words. “I’m not giving her up without a fight. See you in court.”
