Susan ekerete - Season 1 - Episode 20

“What’s the next step, Susan? Is the plan to sit here all night? Because that would be a terrible plan.”Susan threw Michael a cross look. They had been sitting silently in his car, after Susan had asked him to stop and park by a fairly busy bus stop so she could think. She had spent the last fifteen minutes watching people stroll past under the bright orange-tinged streetlights, as she tried to think of what their next move would be. But although she was amped upon adrenalin because of her escape from near-capture, her mind seemed to unable to hold a cogent thought. She had been trying to force herself to reach a decision when Michael interrupted her thinking.“No, Michael, the plan is not to sit here all night.” She responded dryly.Michael turned to her and raised an eyebrow. He had obviously not missed thesarcasm in her tone.“Okay then, smartass. What’s the plan?” when Susan stayed silent, he shook his head and smiled. “You don’t have one, do you?”A young lady hawking cucumbers stoppedby the passenger side window and pointedat the tray on her head inquiringly. “Sister, buy cucumber.” She said in a thickly accented voice. She leaned over and pushed her cleavage toward them.Susan leaned back, ran her eyes over the green m----s on the tray and the brown ones waving in her face, then shook her head, watching as the girl sashayed away after giving Michael a long lingering look. Susa turned to see Michael’s eyes following the girl too.“Maybe we should just sit here and let youenjoy the scenery.” She muttered. “The scenery certainly seems to want you to look anyway.”Michael snorted in amusement. “Is that jealousy? You’re jealous of the cucumber girl?”Susan felt a smile tug at her own lips. “I am not jealous. And ‘cucumber girl’ just sounds wrong.”Michael threw his head back and laughed loud and long as he realized his unintentional double entendre, his voice filling the interior of the Honda. Susan felt her mood lift slightly for the first time that day. She watched him as his Adam’s apple bobbed in mirth, her eyes running down the length of his neck and lingering on his broad shoulders and wide chest. She had to resist the urge to reach out andtouch him, to feel the beat of his heart beneath her fingers. She took a deep breath and shuddered as the faint smell ofhis cologne invaded her senses. When she looked back up, their eyes met and held. She turned away quickly before the sudden heat in her lower stomach grew into a blaze and tried to return her mind to their current shared problem.“Maybe we should go to the police and report this…” she sighed.“The men after us are the police, remember?” Michael reminded her. “I highly doubt we could convince their colleagues to be on our side.”Susan felt all the good feeling Michael’s laugh had dredged up start to fade under frustration. “So what do we do then? I admit I’m out of ideas.” She hesitated. “Dowe go to your house?”Michael’s lips twitched.

“Any other day and I would have been ecstatic at the idea. But in this case, it’s probably also not a good step to take. They came to my home to question me, remember? They know where I live.”“Do you realize how serious this is, Michael?” Susan said worriedly, biting her nails, a nervous habit she thought she hadstopped. “We can’t go to our houses and we can’t keep running forever. I have a daughter to worry about; I’m just glad she will still be in Ghana with her teachers for a few more days. But I need to resolve thisbefore then.

We need to resolve this.”Michael stared at her in concern. He couldsee the stress was really getting to her. Hefelt like pulling her close and giving her a comforting hug; but he figured it was probably the last thing on her mind. He opened his mouth to say something encouraging and was interrupted by Susan’s phone. The device buzzed in her handbag and she dropped her hands from her mouth and rummaged for the phone. Her brow furrowed as she raised the glowing screento her face, and then her ear.“Hello? Asuquo? Just what the hell have you gotten me into…?”“Yeah, Susan thanks for asking. I’m fine.” Her ex-husband’s sarcastic response made her grit her teeth. Michael raised a brow and began to speak but she waved him to silence.“Who’s there with you?” Asuquo asked. “I heard a male voice…”“None of your business, Asuquo.” Susan snapped. “Just tell me how to get out of the situation you have put me, and subsequently your daughter, in.”A heavy sigh came overthe phone. “Samson and his men are not to be trifled with. I hope you know they can trace your general location with your phone? So you better get another one for now if you plan to go into hiding like me.”A thought began to niggle at Susan but she ignored it and focused on Asuquo’s last words.“Go into hiding?! How? I have a daughter…we have a daughter that cannot be dragged around like a travelling bag! I need a better solution to this whole thing.”“I don’t know what to say Susan. I know this is my fault but the best I can do now is avoid that man. That’s why I got this new number…”Susan suddenly remembered what was bothering her. She gasped and threw her hand over her open mouth in alarm. Michael touched her shoulder immediately. “What’s wrong, Susan?”From the phone, Asuquo fired his own inquiry at Susan. “Whose voice is that? I know I heard a male voice…”“Quiet, both of you!” Susan yelled, as she realized what she had done.

She looked atMichael in horror, the phone clutched in her hand. “Oh Asuquo I’m so sorry.”“What did you do?’“Your number, Asuquo.” Susan said shakily. “I sent Samson Udofia your phonenumber.”
