Ada had been peeping at Aniekan from the window; she had noticed a fire in his eyes, the moment Elena had stepped into the white house. That little witch already had Aniekan hooked. Ada hissed and pulled herself from the window.

‘What is it’? Ese dropped the fork he held and rushed to meet her.
‘Elena is here’. Ada chewed her food thoughtfully. She was not a fool. She wasn’t new to the white house neither was she new to Aniekan’s life. Imaobong’s death had ripped him apart, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t notice a beautiful woman if he saw one.

Three years was enough for anyone to find healing and closure. Ada guessed that Aniekan had. It all made sense to her now. Things were falling into the right places, the puzzle had been solved.
‘Of course, we were all expecting her’. Ese watched as the girl pulled her box out of the garden.

‘Your brother is in love with her. I now understand why he was so interested in the same woman that wanted to tarnish his image. I told you this girl was bad luck. We must find a way to get rid of her, else she would draw Aniekan to herself and control him. Already, her charms are working. If we do not act fast, we’ll lose’.
Ada hadn’t been comfortable around Elena from the first meeting. First, she shared a resemblance with Imaobong, and now, Aniekan was fascinated by her.
‘Whoa, slow down baby. What are you talking about? My brother swore never to love another woman the way he loved Imaobong. Besides, people don’t fall in love in weeks. Love doesn’t just happen’. Ese scoffed. He wasn’t convinced by Ada’s argument.
Ada was appalled by Ese’s words, but she tried not to show it.

‘You don’t understand! Women have sharper eyes than men. This girl is trouble, Ese. We must get rid of her’. Ada whispered.
‘If Aniekan is interested in Elena as you think, it could just be infatuation. I don’t see that nitwit as a threat. She is foolish and naïve. Her presence wouldn’t affect our plan in anyway. You are just scared o, because she looks like Imaobong. And I am tired of going down this road with you.
We set Imaobong’s car on fire and we fed her poison for days. She is dead and gone’!
Ese had to deal with Ada’s incessant nightmares and screaming. She grew more paranoid everyday and it irritated him.
Even the mention of her name made her ill, ‘you don’t understand my fears Ese. Sometimes, I feel there is another presence in this house. I feel someone’s eyes watching me from a corner, but when I turn around, there’s no one’.

Ese grabbed her by the shoulders, ‘that is because there is no one. Everything you feel is all in your head. Now, get rid of your fears and let’s focus. My brother is not ready to involve me in Demon Hall. You should try to get information out of him’.
‘And if I fail’? Ada asked.
‘We would have no choice but to find a way to reach the prototype’.
‘Good morning’. Elena whispered to the lawyer and Ese who stood by a window facing the garden. They had a guilty look on their faces. It seemed they had been talking about her.

Ada faked a smile and rushed towards Elena, ‘Hi Elena, I hope you are good. You look so beautiful in that suit. Welcome to the white house’. Ada stretched out a hand for a shake.

Ese couldn’t pretend to like Elena, he barely looked at her. He wasn’t much of a pretender, only when it came to his brother.
‘Thank you Barrister’. Elena responded and quickly took her hand. Elena realized that her mother had been right about the lawyer. Ada’s smile exuded evil and mischief; it didn’t reach her eyes. Elena could tell that her presence bothered Ada. She guessed her grudge was still about the fifty million naira.
Ada released her hand slowly, ‘I hope you’ll put in your best in Games Village. I hear you are creative. Aniekan has told me so much about you. I am sorry I treated you that way Elena, I totally misjudged you.
I am very protective when it comes to my clients. Aniekan is more like the brother I never had’.

Elena could see through her lies, and her desperation to be accepted; but she wouldn’t have any of it.
‘I am sorry for the fake news I put up, but I have tendered my apologies and he has accepted. I must go now, he gave me only thirty minutes to get ready for work’.
