The haunted bride - Season 3 - Episode 24

‘Tamar, are you in there’? Mr. Benjamin pressed his ears against the door. He couldn’t walk into the room without knocking. What if she was indecent? He pulled in a sharp breath and waited, while contemplating on the next action to take.
Now that Elena was away, he had no business staying under the same roof with Tamar. Though he’d been mad at her for treating him cruelly all these years, he had decided to let the grudges go. He was content with the way his kids turned out.

Eno was happy with the man she chose for herself. The last time he spoke to Cassandra on phone, she’d sounded so relaxed and fulfilled. Elena was out of the trouble she’d gotten herself in. One thing was certain; she would end up with the tech billionaire. Mr. Benjamin had seen this from day one.
Elvis, the long lost sheep of the family had returned. Though he wasn’t interested in forming a bond with the rest of the family, his interest in Elena’s matter counted for something. Mr. Benjamin was a happy man. It was time to move on and start over.

‘I came to tell you that I am leaving. Now that Elena is gone, it is appropriate for me to return to my house’. He bellowed.
Tamar froze on hearing this. No, she couldn’t stay alone in the mansion. The thought of having Benjamin around made things easier for her. But if he walked out on her, like the rest of the family, how would she survive?

She grabbed a light blue robe and slid her arms through. Quickly, Tamar rushed to the door and opened it. She had made a mistake by divorcing Benjamin in the first place; she wished she could turn back the hands of time.
‘You weren’t sleeping’. Benjamin noticed her eyes were alert. Why then had she ignored his calls?

Tamar found it difficult to speak. Shame washed over her as she remembered the unkind way she had treated this man. She had betrayed him, and sold all of his cloth designs to an African Textile industry. And they had made a lot of money from it. Will Benjamin ever forgive her?

‘I…I wasn’t’, she stuttered.
Benjamin noticed she wasn’t her bright or troublesome self. He had been with Tamar enough to notice when she wasn’t happy. This time, her eyes didn’t only portray sadness, but immense fear. What he didn’t know was what she feared.

He also noticed the clean scent that emanated from her body. Whatever deodorant she used had a certain effect on him. It sent lewd images of them making love to his mind.

He’d dreams of being with Tamar intimately some days back. The truth was that, he wasn’t leaving the mansion because his purpose had been served. He was running away from a romantic awakening. He had always loved Tamar all these years, even when she despised him.

He couldn’t remain in that spot any longer. Tamar was a wealthy woman; she was still very young and beautiful. He guessed she was seeing someone. He couldn’t remain a victim; he had to stay far away from her. And his resolution would begin right there.
Although he knew she was in a bad mood, he decided not to care.

‘Like I said, I am leaving’. He didn’t utter any word in return; he grabbed his box firmly and made for the stairs without looking back.
Tamar watched him calmly, her teeth jittered. Her hands trembled as she watched him walk out of her life. Was this what she really wanted, a life of loneliness and regret?
‘He would never forgive me for all I have done’. Her mind whispered.
Tears rushed down on her cheeks as Benjamin stepped on the last case. She found it difficult to control her emotions. She quickly rushed towards him and called out sternly.
‘Benjamin, please don’t go’!
At first, he thought he hadn’t heard well, so he continued moving towards the door.
‘Please…’ Tamar descended the stairs after him. Her stubborn pride had taken her nowhere. She needed to apologize, and submit herself to him. The second call was firmer than the first. He paused the minute he reached the door.

Mr. Benjamin could hear her sobbing; and the sound of her weeping broke the last resolve he had. Clearly, something was bothering Tamar and he couldn’t leave her in that state. He dropped his box gently on the floor and turned around. When he did, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Tamar was on her knees crying.
‘Tamar’? His brows furrowed.
‘Look, I know what I am asking is too much. It sounds ridiculous, even to my own ears. I have wronged you Benjamin. I have committed a great crime against you. I despised your love and promises. I abandoned our marriage when love was what we needed most.
I tried to turn our children against you. I have been a terrible mother. Please forgive me for all the pain I have caused you. I need you Benjamin. My priorities in life were misguided. I have come to see the light and I want you to forgive me for starters’. Tears poured out from the corners of her eyes. Tamar’s heart was broken and contrite. Her words were sincere and straightforward. She wished Benjamin would grant her another chance at love and life.

He couldn’t believe his ears. Tamar hardly apologized to anyone. Why would she want his forgiveness now? He realized that he wasn’t even mad at her, for all the things she confessed. He always loved Tamar deep down.

‘Why are you apologizing now’? He lowered his eyes, and fixed them on hers. He needed to see if she was trying to lure him into a trap.
Tamar sniffed in some air, ‘I don’t have an agenda Benjamin. I saw the way you cared about our daughter. You are a good man. I was foolish’.

It didn’t take a minute before he knew of certain that she was truly sorry. One of the things he liked about Tamar was his ability to see through her. The only people she could deceive were her children but not him. He knew her like the lines on his palms.
