To say that I was heartbroken was an understatement. I was devastated. I was humiliated. Why
was I rejected everywhere that I went? It’s like I reek poverty. I hate this honestly. I sat in the car
sobbing. I must have fallen asleep because I was woken up by a knock on the window. When I
looked up I saw Les’s mother standing there with a frown on her face. I woke up and opened the
door then stepped out.

L’s mom: You are even sleeping comfortably in my son’s car. Do you even know how much it
costs? Sies wa swabisa maan.

I looked down since i had no response for her

Her: is that even Lesley’s child or are you the trapping type?!

Me: with all due respect ma this is Lesley’s child.

Her: Liar!

She said that screaming and pushing me back.

Her: Listen to me and listen carefully. I will open that gate and you will run for your life and never
look back. If you don’t do that, I will kill you then feed your body to my dogs. Well your head i will
courier it to your family!!

I sobbed silently while looking down.

Her: You are ugly and you lack class. I hate you! My daughter in law is Mashudu and no one else.

You are stupid and I’m sure you didn’t go to school. You are so stupid thinking that you can warm
your poor self into this family! Wow! Do you even know how to cook sophisticated dishes? Chicken
a la king? Useless child!

Her: Go!!!!

By now I was i had hiccups. I was devastated. She opened the gate and I turned to walk to it but it
closed as I was still walking towards it. I turned around to look what was happening only to find the
rest of the family outside. Les looked so angry as well as Ethan. I couldn’t read Mr Pilusa’s facial
expression. I stood there frozen, scared and perplexed. Les looked at his mom and she looked down in shame.

LESLEY
We were sitting in the house and talking. I told my dad what my plans were and he understood. He
understood where I was coming from. He offered me all my things back and I told him I will get
back to him about that. We were looking for my mother so we could tell her but she was nowhere
to be found. We decided to leave without seeing her and we used the back door because we were
sitting outside anyway. We walked in on her saying all sorts of things to Rudzi. I was disappointed
but again remembered that this woman has always been bitter. I was livid. I was disgusted. I
tolerated it when mom was looking down on her in the house but now….nc nc nc. This woman
thinks I will bow down to her. I don’t need them anymore. We had come to an agreement but now.

Now no. I will go back on my word.

Me: Mother!

Ethan: Woman!

Dad: Mme Pilusa!

We all said in union. She jumped because she didn’t think we would find her. She was
embarrassed. But I know my mother. She could be acting.

Me: Mother how could you? How could you? All because of Mashudu you now have to do this?

Mom: Les my dear this girl is not suited for you

Me: There is nothing to explain here because I heard everything! Let me tell you something you
don’t know about this Mashudu that you praise so much. When you decided to stop giving me an
allowance and kicked me out, I couldn’t afford her lifestyle anymore. She left me. She went and
slept with Stanley. From Stanley she moved to Ethan and then came back begging me to take her
back. After begging she went BACK to stanley again. Is that the kind of daughter in law you want?

Is that what you define as “CLASS”?!

Mother: I know you are lying!

Me: whatever mom! And my girlfriend here found me with NOTHING! She stuck with me even
when I had that NOTHING! Now that I have money she has never even asked for a cent! She has
never nagged me about endless trips and allowance. Even in her state she wants to work and
earn her own money. You should be ashamed of yourself.
