Colors of the heart - Season 1 - Episode 12

Skye

Black was the ceremonial color for sadness, sorrow. Black represented my black heart and the emotion that followed my terrible decisions. I was sorrowful.

When Skye picked up her bag, walked out of her room and went into the sitting room the following morning, she want expecting to see anyone but She met her father sipping a cup of Lipton, like he always did before breakfast. She’d expected him to be at work since it was past eight.

“I’m sorry…” she started, it was so hard to say those words. She felt as if there were millions of pins in her throat. She swallowed hard and looked at her father.

“This is your house Skye, you don’t have to go anywhere” her father murmured. Skye shook her head “Cherry wants me gone, it’ll be easier for her to….to forget all that happened if I left” Skye said wiping a stray tear away with her palm.

Mr Evans sighed fixing her a stare “I don’t think she’ll ever forget, neither will I. What you did Skye…to me…to your sister…I don’t think we’ll ever forget” her father said.
“I’m sorry that You and Shade are over…..if anything…You deserved better” Skye said looking at her toes.

“The only reason I brought Shade to this house was because of you, Cherry left and got busy with work, I assumed you would need company especially with Olivia in the university” Her father stated. “When Shade came, you treated her awfully so she returned the favor” he continued.

“I’m leaving….you can bring her back” she said without remorse. “That’s not important right now, if you had any good sense, you’ll go on your knees crawl, cry, beg and grovel until your sister forgives you” Her father said.

“There’s no point in apologizing, she said she’s no longer my sister. I’ll leave, like she said….I’ve done enough” Skye said.
“I don’t know where you learned how to be so proud, malicious and selfish. Cherry told me a lot of things yesterday” her father shook his head a sad expression on his face.
“Why did you do it…why did you hurt Cherry?” her father asked.

Skye burst into tears again “You two hurt me first, you two were always so close. You preferred Cherry to me, your golden daughter and I was just the one you had to tolerate. You two would sit and talk about mum, knowing fully well that I barely remembered her. It wasn’t fair for her to have you, her memories of mom and still have Melvin on top of it. It felt like she got all the good luck in the family and I had nothing!” she shouted.
“Skye, we shared our memories of your mother with you all the time so you wouldn’t feel left out and I love you two. I have no favorite, I love you two equally. You turned your sister against me, told her terrible things about me.” Her father said standing up now.

“As for Melvin….I don’t even want to think about the things you’ve done with him” her father said.

“I made a mistake…..” Skye muttered.
Her father nodded “People stay and learn from their mistakes, don’t run away and make another one. If you want to go, go, if you want to stay then you have every right to. I won’t send you out of your own house, I won’t render my daughter homeless” Mr Evans said.

Skye nodded and looked at the door. “I want to leave….for now. Give everyone a break” she said.

“Alright, take care of yourself Skye…. remember to keep in touch” Mr Evans said leaving the sitting room.

“I will…” Skye whispered and walked out of the house.

“Can I stay here for a while?” Cherry asked Louisa when she answered the door. “Sure, does that mean we’re good?” Louisa asked.

Cherry smiled a little “You have a lot to make up for, you hurt me Louisa….I couldn’t believe….I’ll forgive you but it’ll take time” Cherry answered.

“I have all the time in the world” Louisa smiled back. “How did it go with Skye and your dad?” Louisa asked.

“Terrible, you wouldn’t believe all the things she’s done” Cherry sighed entering the house.

“I would….” Louisa muttered following Cherry. Cherry turned to look at her “Did she tell you of her plans to give Melvin money to start up his business?” Cherry asked curiously.

Louisa looked at her wide-eyed “Woah, what? Cherry don’t be mistaken, Skye and I spoke twice. Don’t think that she told me every one of her evil deeds” Louisa said.
Cherry sighed “I can’t believe my little sister is so dark and twisted. My dad never stopped paying her school fees neither did he maltreat her. She lied, she was using me all those years to get Melvin” Cherry said breaking into a sob.

Louisa’s chest clenched “Where did I go wrong, what did I miss, how didn’t I see this coming?” Cherry asked herself.

“She was such an angel in my eyes, how did she become that?” Cherry asked rhetorically.
Louisa sighed “It doesn’t just happen in a snap, it takes years. Something must have been eating up Skye for years…she did such a good job hiding it, no one would have noticed. It’s not your fault” Louisa said.

Cherry nodded “She was such a good actress and pretender, she could have fooled the pope. If Melvin hadn’t proved his innocence with that call, I wouldn’t ever have believed him” Cherry said.
“You loved her, she was your everything” Louisa rubbed her back.

“Did I ever tell you that my mother was not medically fit to have other children after me?” Cherry asked. Louisa shook her head and remained silent.

“The doctors warned her about it, but I kept on pestering her that I wanted a sibling. When Skye came into this world, I was so happy that I promised myself she would never be unhappy, that I would protect her and give her whatever she wanted. It was after Skye’s birth my mother got really sick, when she died I vowed that I would be everything Skye needed. A mother, a sister, a friend and a father if necessary. All my efforts were in vain, I couldn’t even raise her right” Cherry said trying hard not to cry again.

“It’s not your fault” Louisa said comfortingly.

“It’s my fault, my father was busy with work. It was my job to raise Skye. I spared the rod and spoiled her instead. I never corrected her when she was wrong, I defended and supported her misbehavior, If I’d scolded her when she was wrong, she probably wouldn’t have ended up so bitter, so malicious and selfish” Cherry said.

“You were also a child, it was your father’s duty to raise You and Skye. He got so wrapped up in work trying to distract himself from the pains of your mother’s death that he failed to look after the jewels she’d left behind. Cherry you can’t do everything on your own without making mistakes, you’re only human” Louisa said.

“And now, I’ve sent her away. To be what, to be worse? I should probably call her and tell her I forgive her. Let bygones be bygones” Cherry said reaching into her pocket to get her phone.

Louisa stopped her “She needs to grow up, see the real world. You’re just making things easy for her, if she knows your worth, she’ll come back” Louisa said.
Cherry smiled a little”When did you get so sensible?” Cherry asked.

“I’ve been trying to grow up too, anyway I’m cooking today” Louisa said trying to distract Cherry from her depressed state.
“Woah! Did I hear right? I thought rich, classy girls didn’t cook. What are you making, jollof rice, pasta, soup?” Cherry teased.

“Madam, don’t get your hopes up. I’m frying plantain and egg” Louisa said chuckling.
The bell rang again. Louisa turned to Cherry “Go get the door , I’ll start preparing the plantain. If it’s not my agent or anyone from work, I’m not home” Louisa whispered.

Cherry nodded and went to the door. She answered the door after the third ring and saw Teddy. “What are you doing here?” they asked each other at once.

“I’m here because Louisa is my best friend and this is her house, I can’t say the same for you. Why are you here Teddy?” Cherry asked crossing her arms against her chest.
“I’m here to see Louisa” Teddy said. “You know, you tell her to stay away from you all the time but you always keep coming back to her” Cherry smirked.

“I’m not here to make peace with Louisa, You’re the reason why I’m here, you and Melvin. He quit his job today” Teddy said.

Cherry’s smirk faltered “He did?” she asked. Teddy nodded. “Is he….at your place?” Cherry asked.

“Yes, he’s a mess. I know what happened was fücked up but don’t end your love life because of Skye. You love him, he loves you. Whatever happened was a mistake, let it go” Teddy said.

Cherry nodded. “Alright, could you take me to him?” Cherry asked.

“You can use my car, I have a meeting in an hour. The office driver would come to get it from the house before then” Teddy said.
“Teddy, about the other day….Louisa and I talked about it, I’m sorry I accused you of….taking advantage of Skye. Of course you’d never do that to my sister….you loved her like a sister” Cherry said as Teddy handed her his car keys.

“Louisa should learn to mind her own business, I don’t need her springing up to my defense…but she’s right. I never saw Skye as anything other than a junior sister” Teddy said.

Cherry nodded “We’ll talk later” Cherry said going to the car. “Make him happy” Teddy called out.

Cherry turned around. “Look Teddy, I don’t know what’s going on between you and Louisa but she’s not going to be waiting for you all her life. Eventually she’ll move on, stop playing games with her. As for him…..I always make him happy” she said and waved.

Teddy waved back before going into the house.

Skye placed the money into her purse, she’d withdrawn twenty thousand from her bank account. She dialed Olivia again but there was no response.

So she opted for a text instead ‘I want to leave Lagos, do you have any ideas?’ she texted.

‘Why, what’s wrong?’ Olivia texted immediately.
‘I’m an adult, I need my space. I just want to get out of Lagos for a while’ Skye texted.
‘Did Cherry agree?’ Olivia texted back. Skye stared at the text for a long time. She couldn’t tell Olivia the truth, it was too embarrassing.

‘Yes, my dad did too. They gave me some money, I can come to you’ Skye texted.
‘I’m busy with exams, I won’t have time. Why don’t you wait for a while? I’m going to Dubai with mom during school break…I’ll convince her to let you come with us’ Olivia texted.

School break was months away, she couldn’t wait. ‘Can’t wait, guess I’m on my own’ she texted.
‘How about Abuja, Ben is there. He’s busy half the time but he has a house there. I’ll ask him to let you stay until my school break’ Olivia texted.

Skye sighed and thought about it, Abuja? Ben didn’t know what had happened and Abuja was far away from Lagos.

Could she do it, could she have a fresh start and be happier?

She was so tired of being unhappy and sad all the time. Perhaps Abuja was a good idea.
‘Sounds good, let me know when he agrees’ she texted back holding her breath.
People learned from mistakes? She didn’t believe that. She’d rather hide them and forget she ever made mistakes.
