Rachel was stunned. “i beg your pardon?”
“i have asked you to marry me.”

He looked down his nose at her, and Rachel laughed. ”you aren’t serious, martin? We hardly know each other. And we certainly don’t.”

“love one another?”
he dismissed the idea with a flip of his hand. ”love is a mudane notion, my dear. It is nothing more than a severe case of bubbles in the stomach. You get the same effect with indigestion. Fondness is more realistic and i am quite fond of you. I have delibrated over this my dear, i have money and a tract of land outside san diego where i plan to build ma home. Naturally it would be convenient if i have ma companion. You on the other hand are sadled with your step mother Audra and thanks to the war you have little money and no prospects of marriage, except perhaps to some uneducated clod who smells like a cow. It would be a terrible waste fot your beauty and breeding to settle for such a man, well what do you think?”(omo see proposal)…….

She stared at him a few minute before realizing that her mouth was open. Snapping it shut she stuttered. ”i..i-oh well_”
“you’re speachless”

she nodded.

“i don’t expect an answer right now of cause you can tell me later. However, i will bid you good-night.”stepping against her, he slid his arm around her waist and tipped her face up to his. She stood there like a limp rag doll as he pressed his dry mouth against hers. And though she closed her eyes and waited for a swirling s£nsat!on in her stomach. It never came.

He left her without another word but with a smile that said he had little doubt she would come around to his way of thinking.

Rachel leaned against the wagon, weak with the horrible realization that he was probably right.

“so are you going to marry him or not?”

whirling around, Rachel glared into the shadows at Davis blacker than black silhouette and very nearly shouted. ” how dare you sneak up on me?”

“i didn’t sneak. If you and stillwell hadn’t been so s----d up together, you might have heard me.”

“you’re disgusting, Davis”.
His smiles infuriated her further. She was amazed at how easily he could do that_infuriate her without saying a word. Plunking her hands on her hips, she said. ” you know, you could learn a few manners from Martin.”

she sensed that he smiled again, but she couldn’t be certain. He’d moved deeper into the shadows..

“all right. Next time i drink coffee, i’ll stick ma little finger out,”
he responded.

“what do you want?”
she demanded.

“now that,Miss Gregory, is a loaded question.”

feeling her face heat up, Rachel attempted to move around him to the back of the wagon. But he stopped her dead by grabbing her arm and pulling her up beside him.

“you’ve been drinking, Mr Davis. I smell it on your breath!”
their eyes met and that thrill of excitement grabbed her stomach as she attempted to struggle from his grasp. Then her eyes widened further as she discovered, “No chains! Sam’s released you again. Mr Davis and i demand to know why!”

“nosy little thing, arent you a sweet heart, curiosity will kill you one day.”

“then i will ask him myself”
she wiggled furiously as his grip tightened.

” all right, all right,” he drawled. ”if you must know miss Gregory, i’m a good guy here to bamboozle the bad guys and_”

“ha! With a toss of her head, she declared, now that is the best one yet. Did you go to school to learn how to lie?”

“nah,it comes naturally darling. Looking off in the distance, he abruptly changed the subject.”where’s Audra?”

“Audra! Is that why you are here? To attempt a rendevous wid ma stepmother? Oooh i should have known.

LOVE IN THE AIR

The rear door was flat, suspended by chains on each side. With little effort,Davis hoisted her onto it. She fumbled in the darkness for a candle and having lit it,found the tattered bible she had placed inside a trunk. She returned to the rear of the wagon, then plunked onto the shelf, letting her feet dangle halfway to the ground. Her ankles were showing. Davis stared at them for a moment before backing to the door and hefty himself beside her.

Swinging his feet, he grinned while staring down on the top of her head. He took note that although his hands were pressed up against hers, she didn’t move. He also noted that her pale throat was becoming botched with colours, so was her face. Forcing his eyes from her face he leaned to the right, peering around the wagon canvas to see if any one was coming. The coast was clear so he straightened and look back down at the book as she jabbed it in his belly.

” what was that for?”
he asked her
“to read”she answered

“but i thought you were going to read it……”

“later. I’d like you to read first, you have a wonderful mellow voice that i should enjoy hearing, i think. Go ahead, Mr. Davis. Don’t be shy i await this with rapt anticipation.”

He looked at the book again, then back to her face. ”all right.”he slowly took the bible, turned it this way and that, opened the cover and flipped through the tissue thin raged pages before leaving back to the first pace. He cleared his throat.

Leaning slightly against him, she peered over his hands at the black and white page and smiled. “what are you going to read me Mr Davis?”

“genesis”
he replied

“genesis what chapter?”
she asked again

“one…… Its ma favourite.”
he replied

“then by all means do read it.”

dragging his eyes back to the book,he lifted it almost to the end of his nose. Squinted in the dim light, and began clumsily. “in the beginning………………. Ah………………. God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void.and darkness was upon the face of the deep… And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.. And God said let there be light and there was light.”
“go on”

“and God called the light day and the darkness he called night…… And the evening and the morning was the first day. He snapped the book shut and t----t it into Rachel’s hand.
Now it is your turn. I was never much for reading aloud.”

“but you do it so well”

he stared at the dusty toes of his boots, somehow discomfited by her scrutiny. He had never known a woman who could make him squirm the way she could.
