[Story] Love, Lust And Lost

As he looked forward, his face was distressed. It appeared so roughen, so stiffen – to show how un-pleased he was with what he saw. What was happening? Arh! this is definitely the end for him. He saw it clear now that there was no way forward. The road led to a dead end. No more path to drive through ahead. Why was this happening all of a sudden? The fuel gauge and now, no road to drive along. These were pure indications luck had bade him no chance today.

Sweats gathered on his face as though their assembly was summoned. Few drained out of his hair like water would drool out after bath. The heat was burning deep inside his stomach. Heartbeat had increased rapidly.

He thought about what he was going to do as he approached some few distances to the wall ending the road, but his thoughts were not allowed to linger much as the engine suddenly shut down and the movement of the car went slow and slow till it halted like a military men on parade would do.

“God eh, chai!!! Te’mi bami (I’m at wits end)!” He shouted so loud – Fatimah and Mariam had to look back to know what the noise was about. Then they saw it and there was a deep sigh.

Not so much was the relief they felt but at least they were assured the bus would not move beyond this spot before the rescue would arrive.

He thought about where he would run to as there were only two houses at both side of the road. One had it’s gate opened. The street light revealed the black gate as it was already getting back. He thought about escaping with the girls. Would it be safe to do that? He asked his thoughts.

“Lai lai!” He protested. That would spell doom for him.

He quickly removed the car keys and the moment he was about to get down was when David’s bike closed in on the bus. He raced into the gate without considering what fate might be his.

David was less concerned now about the driver that was racing off. The first thing he did as he jumped down of the moving bike was to run to the bus and confirmed the girls were safe. Soon as the Mopol packed his bike, he pursued the culprit.

“How una dey?” David asked as the girls were already coming out of the bus to meet David.

Instead of answering a simple question. They both broke down in tears. They wept loudly and almost collapsed when David held both friends at arms. They had really undergone some psychological trauma. Their thoughts about what might be their fate at the hands of the assumed kidnapper.

“Una safe na, make una no cry again,” David consoled and led the girls to a pavement to seat.

“Ole!!! Ole!!! Ole!!!” Was the noise that followed the kidnapper out of the compound and he ran into the Mopol who held him at his trousers.

“Na Ole, him wan come rob us for house,” a lady started her madness. Clasps her hands and started pointing her fingers abusively at the kidnapper.

It appeared when he entered the compound, people had asked him who he was looking for but he gave no answer as he tried to find a way to either jump the fence or somewhere to hide from the upcoming danger/threat, the Mopol.

Without thinking much, someone had raised alarm and soon, the cries of thief had followed the kidnapper’s trail – as he raced for his life. This was certainly going to be much worst than what he actually did. Shout of thief meant mobs gathering.

“Mo kin s’ole (I’m not a thief)” he defended himself and slaps from different people landed on him without order. Mob had suddenly form to lynch the thief that had dared to come at the very hours of 7:13pm.

“Shut up, you be thief!” Someone said from the mob.

“Abeggi, I no be thief. I fit explain.”

That statement was followed by a boot-off by the Mopol which sent him on his butt0ckz.

“Explain wetin, na here we go kill you. You wey wan jump fence.”

“Ewa tyre wa ejo, ama sun eleyi ni o. A`fi ko awon Ole bi tie logbon. (look for tyre please, we will burn this one. It would serve as example to his colleagues),” another person said and the next thing that happened was that, the assumed thief’s faded red and blue stripe shirt was torn off his body.

“Na my gang member be this,” the fool said pointing to the Mopol.

It was so surprising to the Mopol who still held him by his trousers. Was he going nut or something?.

“Ehn ehn!” The guy who had suggested the tyre exclaimed and raised his hand to strike the Mopol a fall down on your knee slap but the Mopol was strong and dodgy.

“Una dey believe this kidnapper?” The Mopol put in as the people wanted to grab him. The place had gradually filled up with people who lived around.

David who had seen what was happening left the girls and ran to the scene to explain everything that had happened to the people.

“So na so abi? You go kidnap those children for their school wan go do ritual. Your own don good today. Wey the tyre? The matches nko?”

Someone handed him the tyre and he wore it on the kidnappers neck. People were busy striking him. Even the guys around there had all come out in full force, struggling to get through the crowd and beat the kidnapper with weapons they had brought with them.

“See, you people would have to release him for the police to handle,” the Mopol brought out his ID card and showed the crowd. People became surprised he was a policeman, even David was nonplussed.

“No o Olopa (police), we go kill this one for here. We know wetin go happen if the case reach una station.”

“Nothing go happen as these girls are student. The school authority and parents would want justice prevail. They wouldn’t accept bail at the point this case has gotten to. It is a bad offence in the law court.” The Mopol explain after the mob had poured fuel on the kidnapper. It was just the grace of God that had saved him that matches hadn’t been lit. That would have been the end of his life.

After much plead by the Mopol and elders and reputable men around, the mob released him but not without inflicting injuries on him. That is the Nigerian way, they never wanted justice at the Law Court except that which came from them. That which was immediate execution.

Many crowd stared at the girls as lights shone across their faces. There was the spirit of pity in the air. They saw how innocent these girls looked, how beautiful! That much have drown the kidnapper to them, thinking may be their parents are wealthy. That was people’s thoughts. The type of unassuming thoughts or conclusion average Nigerians would have or jump into.

The girls were still sober and it was evident as they constantly prevented mucus from running down their noses.

As a good Samaritan had volunteered to drive the girls home, David’s face caught hold of Fatimah’s face. He focused his attention on Fatimah’s beauty now. It struck him he had never seen such beauty before.

He seemed not to have noticed all this while how beautiful she was. Her jaws to him were the most appealing as they strut out and gave her the redeeming feature of a lady from india. What sort of human was this girl?

Surely, she was a goddess that God had specially endowed, had taken much of his time on.

Her hands were folded to her chest as she looked on in dismay. She appeared to have slimmed down just few hours but it was more revealing in Mariam’s body than hers.

If it were a good day, both friends would have engaged in a discussion or jokes but this night was surely going to be the worst of their stay on earth so far. The day they would pray to live and tell the story of how they almost got kidnapped. All the thoughts of what had gotten them away from school had deserted their memory. Not even how the event had happened showed on their faces.

Mariam braced up and put her hands across Fatimah’s shoulder who also released her folded hands and smiled a little as Mariam said something which was inaudible to David’s hearing who stood afar.

The Mopol inquired may be David could take care of the girls and make sure they were safe – which he gave a positive reply. The kidnapper was soon led away in handcuffs by the Mopol.

When the good Samaritan had come out from his flat with his car keys. David took the last chance to gaze on the heaven of beauty that sat some distance away. He was falling in love with this damsel and would try all it takes to get her.
