CLAIRE.

“Turn to the news.” She heard Bob say as she answered the phone.

Turning the channel from Nat Geo world which is her favorite station to Channels TV with Lizzy firing her shots from where she la!d on the sofa.

As Channels TV came on, the first headline that greeted them was the picture of a young man murdered. Lizzy sprang from where she la!d and walked towards the TV to get a clearer view while Claire relaxed back stunned and shocked.

“It can’t be… no it can’t” Lizzy said looking confused, tears gathering in her eyes.

She stood in front of the television hands on her head as tears dripped down her eyes while Claire cried from the couch.

They couldn’t believe it. Someone they just met few hours ago. For some reason Lizzy failed to believe the news. Rushing back to her previous position, she took her phone and started dialing a number. After some minutes of trying unsuccessfully to get through to the number, she let the phone slip from her hand and dropped to the floor crying.

Claire would have gone to console her friend but, was she any better. She wasn’t sobbing out loud but was shedding a great deal of tears.

For once she wished that they’d let the young man be and contacted the SCD. She regretted not listening to her uncle.

The alarm from the door shook them both out of their mood. Lizzy had stopped crying out loud but was still in her position on the floor sobbing while Claire was with her own thoughts seated on the couch. The alarm sounded again as they looked at each other; fear and uncertainty written over their faces. As they were still contemplating silently to answer the door or not, Claire’s phone started ringing.

Pulling it out from the couch crack she checked for the caller before tapping on the receiver option.

“Ok, coming.” She said standing up. “It’s my uncle.” She repeated casually to Lizzy who was looking inquisitively as she walked to the door.

“Sweetheart! Are you ok?” Bob asked gathering her into a bear hug as the door opened. “Where is Lizzy?” he asked.

She gestured her head into the room standing stiffly while her uncle consoled her, patting her back. Walking into the room holding hands, they met Lizzy who stood up to greet Bob. She also got a hug of comfort and some consoling words from him.

“I think we should get the SCD involved now.”

Claire said with a tone laced with guilt staring away from him in shame as they settled down in different sits.

“Yes, I have already placed a complaint and taken care of everything. They will be here soon to ask some questions; standard procedure.”

“Where did it happen?” Lizzy asked as Bob dropped his last comment.

“Few poles away from here. Whoever killed him must have followed him down here.”

They were still talking when the door alarm rang. “This must be them, the SCD.” Bob said walking to get the door.

Behind Bob walking into the room were two men, the same from the hospital; Owel and Donald.

“Good evening ladies.” Owel greeted as Bob waved them to a double sitter. The ladies just nodded mumbling inaudible words.

“We are going to be straight and fast here ladies,” Owel started taking a breath before he continued. “We have been briefed about everything but, apart from the three of you, is there any other person who knows about your connection with the deceased?”

Claire shook her head in negation looking at Lizzy to know if she had something contrary to say but she also shook her head while Owel’s eyes trailed the both of them.

“We were also made to understand that prior to hiring the deceased you have been getting warning notes from the suspected killer, is that right?”
She nodded in affirmation looking away from the officer, guilt ridden.

“Is there anything you can tell us about him?”
Clearing her throat, “The last note he dropped was the first after the previous incident. There is nothing I know about him apart from that.”

Owel was about asking another question when his cell started vibrating inside his pocket.

Pulling it out he flipped the lid and placed it on his ear,
“Owel speaking.” He said.

“Where?…….. Ok, on our way.” He said and ended the call. “I just got information concerning the case, we have to be on our
way.”

The ladies and Mr. Bob looked surprised as the officers stood up to go.

“And I hope there is been nothing kept from us this time.” Owel said looking accusingly around the room.

Claire nodded in affirmation, looking away before Bob spoke up. “Officer there is nothing hidden from you.”

“Ok then, if he makes any contact again don’t hesitate to let us know.”

“Sure officer, we won’t hesitate.” Bob replied. “And please we’d like to be kept informed on any development on the case.”

“Ok, drop by in our office tomorrow.” Owel said before they left.
