Jamal pressed the bell and waited for another seconds for response. His
head was heavy, and he really needed to clear them. That was the reason
he was in Adriana’s house. He wanted to know why his foster-father had
insisted he got married to her. Could she have gone to the length of buying
his foster-father’s heart just to have him to herself? But that his passivefather didn’t look like someone that could be bought with anything.

Then from where did the arrangement come from? And moreover, who would
be gaining from the union? Adriana or his foster-father? What was he even
thinking, he should know how Adriana had been all over him for years,
definitely she would be the attaining the best interest of the union if he
consented to it. Something that wasn’t going to happen.

Jamal checked his wrist watch—it was already past a minute since he had
arrived at her house. Why was she taking eternity to open the door for
him? He heaved and brought his hand to punch on the buzzer the second
when the door eventually opened lightly.
Adriana poked her face out of the door. “Afternoon Jamal.” She said curly,
smiling.

Jamal maintained a straight face. “Would you at least invite me in?” He
grumbled.

Adriana nodded with a smile. “Sure yes. Come in.” she said as she opened
the door wider for him.

Jamal entered her house for the first time and let his eyes perused the
environment. He made to sit on a chair but Adriana quickly dragged him
up.

“Let’s go to my room please.” She said, while Jamal followed her.

However, Adriana had forgotten the room she now claimed to be hers was
the one Tamara was using before she returned to send her away. She had
been envious of how Tamara’s room was well furnished, that she quickly
coveted it to and had started calling it her room. And since Tamara was not
even coming back, so that had given her the full access to the room.

Jamal sat on a chair inside the room, while Adriana slipped into the bed.
“So should I say thank you for taking your time to visit me.” Adriana
added.

Jamal scoffed. “Stop hyping yourself. I’m not here for pleasantries.” He
said.

Adriana shrugged. “Well, it doesn’t matter what you are here for. You’re
still here anyway. So thank you Jamal, for coming to visit me.”

Jamal maintained his unfriendly glare. “You are not welcome.” He said,
emphasising the ‘not’.

Adriana pouted her face. “I know one day I will, because I won’t give up
on you yet. I will make sure I do everything within my power to make you
love me.”
She said with a moue face.

Jamal tightened her grimace. Anger was coursing through him as Adriana
uttered her last statement. Her statement had confirmed what he was
thinking. He was now sure what Adriana could have done to make her
foster-father connived with her to betroth her to him.

“Exactly what you did to my father to make to make him force you on me?
Come to think of it Adriana where is your pride? Have you misplaced it or
you probably didn’t remember to come with one when coming to the
world.”
Jamal blurted, while Adriana was clenching her fist together. An
effort to calm her ranging nerves Jamal was getting on—so she wouldn’t be
forced to transform in his presence.

“Adriana, just get this straight into you thin skull that whatever you and
my father is thinking would never come to pass, because I’m not ready to
love a low-life thing like you.”

Adriana was now smiling. She was smiling amidst tears. Tears toppled
down her eyes like rainfall. That was the best she could do to suppress the
anger. She couldn’t afford to transform while Jamal was present. That
would be the end for both of them. But she loved him. She loved him so
much that she would do anything for him.

“Are you saying all this to me because I love you?” she enquired softly,
wiping her tears.

Jamal scoffed. “I’m saying all this to let you know how dumb you are for
going to connive with my father just to get you betrothed to me. That’s so
senseless of you.”

Adriana stared at Jamal and shook her head. “I didn’t go to meet your
father, Jamal. He came to me.”
She said.

Jamal sat right on his chair with surprise etched out on his face. “Are you
sure?”
he asked, supporting his elbow with his kneecap.

Adriana beamed wryly. “Trust me I didn’t. But I’m not denying I couldn’t
have done that to get you. Jamal, I can do more than that just to have you
to be mine forever.”
She said, staring intensely at Jamal.

Jamal shrugged. “Then that should be how crazy you are.” He chipped.

“Exactly, crazy about you.” She replied forlornly.

Jamal swooshed a loud breath. He wished he possess the ability to love
another lady, then that person would have been Adriana. He could read
her mind and see the genuine love lobbying inside there. The true love
glowing in her eyes. He had promised not to hurt her, but there was no
way he was bringing the promise to pass since he couldn’t reciprocate her
love she nurtured for him. Adriana loved him, and the only thing he was
supposed to do was to return the love and not spurning it. That was unfair
of him
He cleared his throat. “Let’s talk about my father.” He said.

Adriana scoffed lightly. “What do you expect me to know about your
father? He is your father you know? Not mine.”

Jamal stood up from the chair and paced about the room. “Why did you
think he wants to pair us together?
He asked.

“I don’t know.” Adriana said.
Jamal stopped pacing and stared at her. “You need to tell all you know.

What he told you about us getting married, and what you think might be
his aim for such a reckless idea.”

Adriana smirked. “Well maybe your father thinks we are cool together.”

she replied and returned Jamal stare on her.
Jamal tapped his forehead, threw a sigh.
Adriana was not helping matters.

Jamal was getting more confused and he was sure needed someone to bail
him out from his confusion. He was silly to have thought of the old man as
a kind-hearted person to have helped him achieved his dream. He should
have suspected foul when the man was spending all his fortune on him
while at the same time snubbing his own biological son. He remembered
Rominick had told him once that he was bringing up for greater purpose—
could the purpose be getting married to Adriana? If it was it, then there
should be a gravid reason for that. That was something he was going to
find out. All he had to do was to tame Adriana till she confessed all what
transpired between her and his foster-father.

“Adriana.”
Jamal called, sitting beside her on the bed.

Adriana didn’t reply. She only faced him and glared.

“Adriana, I’m sorry I don’t love you.”
Jamal muttered.

Adriana nodded. “I know. You’ve said that countless of time Jamal, and its
hurting me.”
She replied blandly.
Jamal raised his eyebrow. “I know and that’s why I’m always sorry.” He
said holding her hands.

Adriana shook his head. “I know you are always sorry but I don’t need it. I
need you to love me back.”
She said, tears strolling down from her eyes.

Jamal brought his right hand to his face and wiped the tears. “I love
someone, Adriana. And the more I love that person, I can’t think of loving
somebody else.”

Adriana smiled faintly. “That’s what you’ve been saying for the past years,
yet no one had seen you with a lady. Are you in love with a ghost?”
she
asked, watching his reaction.

Jamal removed his hands from Adriana’s, stood on his feet and backed her.

“Adriana, the only person I’ve ever loved for the past 15 years of my life is
dead exactly same 15 years ago.”
He muttered fighting the urge to cry.

Adriana sighed, put her hands on Jamal’s shoulder. “She was the girl you
thought was my maid back then right?”

Jamal nodded, still backing her.

“But she’s gone Jamal. You need to love let go her.”

“I know she is gone.”
He said, facing her this time. “But I don’t think I can’t
let her go. I don’t even want to let go. I loved her, I still do and I want to
continue loving her.”

Adriana was getting piqued at Jamal’s utterance. She was seeing herself a
looser beside Tamara already. She wondered how such a nonentity could
be in control of what she failed to have. She was indeed a loser. She
wondered if there was any other way she could make Jamal forget about
Tamara but there was none. Telling her mother about him could risk
exposing Jamal as the son of Ryan. That was something she didn’t want to
happen. She just loved Jamal. She loved him more than the air she breathed
in.

She yanked her hands away from his shoulder and sat in a chair. “It’s okay
to keep loving a ghost.”
She muttered angrily.

Jamal wiped his tears and made to sit beside her when something caught
her attention. He wanted to ignore but couldn’t. It was a small photograph
of Tamara hanging loosely behind the door. He lurched towards it and
unfastened it from door.

“Who is this person? Is this the picture of your maid?”

Adriana was bedazzled by the question.
