Must Read: King Arthur

It was time once more for the most anticipated event of the year according to the schools calendar. Dinner starts by 5 ends by 9. We all knew that the Dinner was going to start by 6 and end 10 even though for formality sake the banners had 5pm on them. Who eats dinner by 5??

Mini Accommodation in the school’s hostels were provided for those who lived far away and would not be able to go home. I was one of such students. At the last school dinner organised, Me and my friends, played through out the night and started sleeping by dawn. 153 students had paid meaning we were expecting nothing less than 150 students. This year we added a little something, without the Principals Knowledge, the After Party. Strictly by invitations, we were inviting only SS3 students and Matured SS2 students. Dress code for the night was Corporate, those who did not have dates were not expected to be at the red Carpet.

It was already friday and I did not have a date everyone else did including Vanessa. Our class had a very irrational number courtesy Laura, the new girl who started with us in SS3, close to our exams. My friend will say “Tell me who does that crap”
I did not need a date to appear on red carpet, I was Chairman planning committee remember?.

It was 4:30pm when I was getting ready to go and make sure everything was in order at school, when a message came through from Vanessa via Whatsapp, I opened it nonchalantly, she was asking if I was really going to dinner without a date. I replied “Yh” I asked her who was her date, it was Davies, Not bad I replied.

Davies was actually not bad, he was handsome, had a little something in his pocket and knew his onions

I Polished my CK designer shoes judiciously, eliminating every trace of stain. I carefully placed my ironed and starched Suade suit also Calvin klein, inside my school bag, I was going to dress in school after preparing for the dinner. When I got to school, Pearl, Sade and the other Members had just arrived in casual clothes as well, we started the decorations and checked everything to make sure it was ok. Natasha’s mum brought some snacks for us. We settled to eat the snack then I had a little pep talk with the team. Natasha did not also have a date.

According to Paul, (the other committee member from SS2) She had turned down every guy that asked her to dinner for reasons best known to her. She smiled when Paul said it. Sade was going with Segun, Pearl with Emeka, Paul with Kemi while Natasha and I were the only people remaining, without a date I knew school dinner would sU-Ck.

The rest members of the committee left to get dressed, Natasha was arranging some stuffs and as soon as she was done I walked up to her and asked her if she would like to be my date at dinner. She smiled, showing her nicely arranged pairs of white teeth, and said; “I have no choice”

That meant yes! We all got dressed and soon enough students started coming in their numbers. The Dj, an ex student started with soft blues after the usual microphone testing. We were ready to start, the doors were now wide opened, red carpet had started, the principal was to kick-start the event then later introduce me and Natasha, because we were to Anchor the event. I dressed up, looking as smart and handsome as ever, putting on one of those my million dollar smile. As soon as the Principal called my name and Natasha’s we walked into the hall like Couples from the Classical era, the atmosphere was romantic, the cheers were simply awesome. We walked up to the stage looking so dashing, she was putting on a long red gown, and a very high heeled shoe that made her exactly my height. The Applause soon died down as soon as we grabbed the ‘mic’ and were ready to begin.

We started by greeting the ladies and gentlemen that were present, Natasha had quite a lovely voice, she read out the events for the day while I called on Pastor Yemi, our school’s CRK teacher. He was escorted by one of the dazzling ushers that were selected for the event..

The prayer though “spicy” was however long.

The main event was going to start now, it was time for the first presentation, A solo performance by Maxwell Adodo. MaXado as he called himself was gifted in the act of playing the guitar. The performance was awesome. At that time food was being shared. Mr okon, Mr Yemi and the principal, left the venue, after dinner was served *winks* . They entrusted the event in our hands and the hands of Mr Victor our Social studies teacher who was Both Social and Jovial.
Next it was time to call out the awards that were planned by Sade and Paul.

Footballer of the year was given to David
Musician of the year was awarded to MaXado
Most beautiful girl for SS1 went to one student I did not know her name, Natasha won the one for SS2, while Vanessa won that of SS3.

Most handsome boy for SS1 went to finn one quiet but cute guy, Paul won that of SS2, Paul was no doubt cute, While that for SS3 surprisingly went to me. (It was simply done by voting, no cheating)

There was no clear winner for the couple of the year.

Next on stage, we had a comedian from SS1, if the principal was still around I bet he would have expelled the guy. It was funny and also very interesting. We had other items like dance, drama, music. When it 9:42 we invited Mr Victor to give a speech on behalf of the principal.

The speech was not long but very boring.

The dinner came to an end after My Vote of thanks and after the closing prayers.

The school bus made two trips for those who could still go home that day. All SS1 students and few SS2 students went home. It was now time for the after Party Mr Victor had also gone home.

**The After Party**
The hall was now half way cleared of the chairs, Lemonades were served in disposable cups.

The hall was now bustling with music, good enough for us, the classes and halls had Acoustic walls so the music was not heard else where, Only those invited stayed back.

People were dancing and I did not want to dull.

I decide to dance with someone, Vanessa was nowhere to be found. I was just observing the event when someone tapped me on my shoulder, it was Natasha, she asked for a dance.
We danced for quiet sometime, she was also a good dancer, she waved her killer body towards my direction when I sighted Vanessa looking rather downcast. I excused myself. As soon as she saw me coming she ran to the class. I followed her, when I got closer I saw that she was crying and whining softly. I asked her what the matter was but she wouldn’t say. Finally after about 5mins of asking her to tell me what it was and threatening to leave her, she opened up. The following conversation ensued;
Vanessa: I think am in love.

(my mood instantly changed for no reason at all)

Me: Hmm, does the person love u too?
Vanessa: I don’t know maybe I should ask him.

(Tears almost flowed from my eyes after hearing this)

Me: Ok

Vanessa: So Victor do you love me too?
(My mood changed within a blink, holding her hands now)

Me: I love you too.
(Although the place was dark, I could see her smile, I guess it was because her teeth was sparking white like Natasha’s)

Me: Will you be my girlfriend (that was the next unguarded word that came out of my mouth
She was still smiling.)

Vanessa: sorry what did you say?

Me: you heard me ‘na’

Vanessa: I did not o

Me: I said will you be my girlfriend?

Vanessa: Depends

Me: On?

Vanessa: if you answer this question correctly.

(In my mind, this girl think say na who wants to be a millionaire we dey for here?)

Me: Hmm Ok ask

Vanessa: What took you so long?

Me: (now smiling broadly) I dunno Ooº°? ?°ºoo maybe because I was shy

Vanessa: Ok Yes.

Vanessa seemed to be more open, she was no longer shy and I loved it about her.
We went back to the hall were we danced till the lights were out, I heard someone scream immediately there was no Power. She said something was Touching her legs, (girls can fear sha) Power was restored and the next thing we saw was Emeka on the flow close to Pearls leg. We all let out a very loud laughter that lasted for quite sometime, meanwhile Pearl did not find it funny.

It was not so bright, but we still posed for some quick images, Me and Vanessa, Pearl and Sade, emeka, Natasha and I, then finally some group photographs, coupled with the ones that were taken during the dinner. We were all going to sleep, Natasha hugged me and told me that she had an amazing time.

For starters, I ‘pecked’ Vanessa on her chick.

She playfully pushed my head away. I went to the boys hotel, after some gist, we slept.
