At The Mercy of the Fire

Kate felt numb
Nothing felt real, like she was asleep. A dream. A very bad, terrifying dream. Volcano Obsidian was finally erupting, the earth shaking as plumes of swirling, fiery smoke blocked out the sun, turning day into night. Ash raining down, casting a thick shadows across the lands.

Then rivers of Lava would flow down the side of Obsidian like burning veins.

But it wasn’t a dream. It was real.

As soon as the plumes of burning ash started to rain down from the sky, an emergency meeting was called by the Councilmen. Kate was immediately escorted into the council chamber, where she stood before the Elders of this Island. Every person who was considered important was there, talking amongst themselves, all of them wondering why the Volcano had chosen to erupt now.

There was only one conclusion.

It was time for Kate to fulfil her duty.
It was something that Kate had been raised to do.

It was her destiny. It was her obligation.
But..

The doors to the council chamber suddenly flung open and there, hastily dressed in her priestess robes was Laura. She still looked pale and weary, and there were obvious signs of the bandages around her injuries.

The other Elders seemed surprised to see her in such a state, and yet Laura regarded no one else, didn’t even glance in any direction. She simple looked at Kate, utmost fear on her face.

“Lady Kate”.

“Laura”,
Kate whispered as she slowly turned around to face her, her eyes expression numbingly blank. “What are you doing? You should be resting”.

Laura shook her head in somewhat frantic notion as she stumbled into the room. “How can I rest when-”

“I know”,
Kate said in a soft voice as she reached out to Laura to aide her. “There’s nothing you can do”.

“No”
Laura shook her head in denial as she held onto her. “No, there must be another way”.

“No, it is our only option”,
an Elder spoke out, who it was Kate wasn’t sure as she didn’t turn to see. “We must ready the Sacrifice Ritual”.

“Yes”,
another Elder agreed, her motherly voice filled with a sense of regret. “Lady Kate is the Peace Keeper, it is her duty to ensure the safety of everyone on this Island. I just wish it wasn’t so soon”.

“But-”
Laura tried to protest. She wanted to say that Kate wasn’t the one who should be punished. She had done nothing but serve the people of this Island.

The one who needed, deserved punished was no other than their very own Princess.

“I understand”,
Kate said as see swallowed the suddn, but understandable need to cry. “It is my duty, what I was born for”

With her hands still holding Laura, Kate began to guide Laura gently back to the Fire Temple. The Fire Elders needed time to prepare the ceremony and for her very own cousin, Kira to get ready as well. After all, it was her duty to push her into the fiery pit. Something she will find great joy with.

“Lady Kate” Laura, too, held an overwhelming sense of sadness.

“It’s alright”, Kate said as she gave a vey shaky and fake smile as they continued to walk, for once Kate not stopping to gaze up in awe of their mighty Volcano. “I am the Peace Keeper, after all”.

Laura continued to hold onto her, tears pooling in her eyes. “It’s not fair”.

Kate continued to hold her smile. “Very little is fair. Please, don’t do anything reckless. Not for me”. She made them both pause in their movements so they could turn to face each other. She then reached up with a shaky hand and tenderly brushed the tears from Laura’s cheek. “Don’t cry, Laura please”.

Laura had her eyes tightly closed. “I don’t want this, Lady Kate. I don’t”.
As soon as they were back inside the still heavily damaged Fire Temple, Levi was there to greet the, Laura collapsed into his arms, clinging onto him as she shook her head. It was a silent confirmation that the day had come. The look of disbelief and sheer devastation on Levi’s face was too much.

Kate spun around on her heel, a sob lodging it’s way into her throat as she hurriedly made her way to her room. When she was called for the council meeting. She had asked Loki to stay in her room she needed to see him again. For the last time.

But as she flung open the doors to her room, it was empty. Loki wasn’t there. There was no sign of him.

Kate stumbled into her room, frantically looking around. She didn’t have much time left. The ceremony was sure to start soon.

“Loki, where are you?” Kate whispered as tears now freely fell from her eyes and she collapsed on the edge of her bed. “I want to see you again, one last time. Please”.

For the next few minutes all Kate could do was cry, she tried to smotter her heartbreaking sobs with her hands. Yet, the tears wouldn’t stop.

She shouldn’t be crying like she was. She had been preparing her whole life for this moment. It was the reason she was born. What she must do. She knew all that perfectly well. And yet, she wanted to live. She wanted to spend more time with her friends. She wanted to learn more about her Fire abilities.
