Dike got into the car and searched for his ignition key. Nwabueze watched him keenly. He felt that Dike had changed in recent time. He was sure that something was bugging his mind. During the past few weeks, Dike had been even more quiet than usual. It was true he was not talkative but these days he seemed to be carried
away, Nwabueze mused. He was worried about Dike’s state of mind because he had become fond of the man.
He knew that Dike was as tough as teak and he carried a punch that was like a sledge-hammer blow. He had never forgotten how Dike once
manhandled a very tall and huge man who had tried to pick a quarrel with him. He and Dike had been
enjoying their drinks
in a nearby bar when this man came up and said in a meancing voice that he didn’t want to drink in the same bar with Dike.
Dike had said quietly, ‘Then drink your beer somewhere else.” Dike knew that the man had an eye on him since
the day a lady they both admired made it
obvious that she preffered Dike. But he never imagine that
the matter would lead to an open confrontation.
Nwabueze had always admired the soft way Dike spoke; he never shouted even when he was furious.
The fellow had angrily turned to Dike and hit him heavily. To Nwabueze, it seemed like a hell of a punch but Dike didn’t even grunt. He swayed this way and that and gave
the man a sledge-hammer blow that put him in his place. Nwabueze hadn’t seen the punch. It had been too fast, but he had seen the effect. The fellow lay motionless on the ground.
No sooner had this happened than three men who were coming out from a nearby restaurant confronted them, apparently rallying to the support of their fallen friend. Without demanding any explanations, they immediately resorted to using their fists. A quick jab
from one of them sent Nwabueze flying, while Dike stood his ground. One after the other, he floored all of them to the amazement of onlookers. Nwabueze, who was still lying on the floor nursing an injury, was impressed.
Although Dike was a loner, he seemed friendly with Nwabueze who had worked so closely with him knew littler or nothing about him except than he
had been Otike’s gunman for some fifteen years, was about forty-four
years of age, unmarried, and had no relations and lived in
a four-room apartment. The boss evidently thought highly of him.

“what the hell lady…do you want to get yourself killed..??”he yelled

“sorry sir…i’m sorry sir..” she apologised with her face bent down

“look here woman…if you want to kill yourself do it else where not with me….and…
he stopped when she raised her head and he saw that she was crying….

“i’m very sorry sir ”
she said and ran away…anthony got into his car slowly and drove off….his countenance suddenly changed…he felt guilty for shouting at her like that…nobody would walk into a moving car like that…i shoulda known something was wrong…maybe i should go back and look for her….or not…she still shoulda looked…not walk blindly….

Anthony sat with his dad….they were having dinner…clifford noticed his son was not bright…he decided to talk to him
“uumm..son…how was work today..?”
he asked

“it was fine dad..” he replied not lifting his head…his father dropped his spoon and pushed the food away…anthony looked at him

“what is the problem dad..??..don’t you like the food..??”
he asked

“oh…i love the food…my problem is you..” “me..??…how..?”

“since you came back from work you have been too quiet and moody…that’s not you…what is the problem?”

“its nothing father…its just work stress..please eat your food.”

“no..no…don’t give me that…i know its not work..tell me what is it..?”
his father pushed..

“(sighs)…i almost ran into someone today..” “what…why weren’t you careful..do you know the scandal it would result in…

“dad…dad…let me finish…it wasn’t my fault…she wasn’t looking…and that’s not even the part bothering me..”

“wait..i don’t get it…you almost running her over isn’t what’s bothering you..??..then what is..?”
…his father asked “her eyes…they were so pure and
innocent but filled with pains and fear…she seemed to be having alot on her mind and i yelled at her..”

Clifford was confused….his son has never felt bad for yelling at someone…even when he realised he was wrong he never shows remorse…but here he was…feeling bad for yelling at a stranger…

“uummm…son…are you alright..?”
he asked..

“yes father..i am…why..??”

“its just that..well…oh nothing..don’t worry about her…she’ll be fine..”
his dad said “i hope so”
