By the third week of his stay, his leg had made a tremendous recovery an he could now walk slowly..

He needed information and Nwabueze was the only person who could keep him to the know about the situation…

“I’d like to make a phone call, Val. Will you take me to a phone booth tomorrow?”, Dike said..

“You sure are thinking of leaving. I told you it’s safe for you to stay here as long as you like”. Val answered..

“I’ve got to get moving, Val”, Dike said..

“I’ll miss you a lot”, Val said.

It was encouraging for Dike to hear that one missed him..

“On my part, I shall never forget all you’ve done for me.. You see, I have a lot of money with me and I’ll gladly part with three hundred naira for all the kindness you’ve shown me”, Dike said..

Valentine looked at him and laughed..

“I appreciate your gesture but I don’t need your money. Use it rather to help yourself out of trouble.. You see, I eat well and I Don’t need big money..

Money to me is evil”.. Val advised..

While alone, Dike thought about what Val said: ‘Money to me is evil’. But he Dike, needed money and it was money that put him in this mess….

The folowing day, Valentine took Dike on his motor-bike to a nearby phone booth and waited for him..

Dike glanced at the place and satisfied that no one was suspicious, entered the booth..

He dialled the number and Nwabuezed answered immediately..

“Nwabueze, this is Dike. I want ……….”, he heard Nwabueze catch his breath..

“Please, Mr. Dike, I don’t want to talk to you.. You’ll only put me in trouble.. Please don’t
talk to me again if you regard me……”, Nwabueze’s voice was cold..

He could hear Nwabueze m0an softly and he could imagine him sweating profusely…. How he wished Nwabueze would just wait and hear him out, he needed information badly and he (Nwabueze) was the right man to give him that….
