BVN: Remove Barriers From Banks - PWDs Tasks CBN

In view of the extension of the deadline for the registration of the Bank Verification Number (BVN), people with disabilities (PWDs) have called on the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) to remove all barriers from banking halls to enable them partake in the exercise.

They have also called for the extension to be indefinite so as to curb the challenges the PWDs are faced with in the rush to beat the deadline.

Making the call in Abuja, yesterday, the executive director, Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CDD), David Anyaele, said, “We are worried that requiring the PWDs to present themselves at the bank like customers without disabilities to participate in the exercise without removing barriers against their access to banking halls will be tantamount to subjecting them to a level of hardship which is inhumane and degrading.”

Anyaele condemned “the CBN/banks discrimination against the over 22 million PWDs in the biometric registration of bank customers due to lack of access to banking halls and services. We call for the exercise to be continuous and without deadline to ensure proper capturing of all Nigeria bank customers irrespective of their ability or disability.”

Anyaele noted that “the exercise was in violation of varying human right policies that protect PWDs against discrimination and inequality.”
