Students, Parents Lament Lack Of Amenities In FGC Ohafia

Some students and parents of the Federal Government College Ohafia Abia are lamenting on what they describe as “non-provision food, water and arbitrary fees” imposed on them by the new management of the school.

One of the students who spoke to LEADERSHIP correspondent, Hope Goodness Onyema claimed that they are under fed on a daily basis as the principle provides only one bag of rice the over 1350 students of the college.

“The principal feeds us with rotten meat and vegetables which he buys by himself, keep in his house and when it is about to spoil, he will bring it out for the cooks to feed us with,” he said.

Another student of the college, Obinna Ezeani alleged that the principal, Mr D.I. Okengwo even went as far to the bakery that supplies bread to the college requesting them to reduce the bread size from N65 to N40 while also employing his sister as the sole supplier of the most other food items used in the kitchen.

According to the student, the principal also removed the catering officer of the college because the woman did not agree to feed the student with those rotten food items.

Meanwhile, some of the parents of the students are still decrying what they call the “high-handedness of the college principal and his inability to follow good conscience by treating the students as sons and daughters.”

“The principal imposed the sum of N40,000 on parents of mid-stream students for the collection of prospective booklets, and now he acts as the bursar of the college by collecting the dues he has imposed on students by himself,” Lady Ngozi Ejiofor said.

Ejiofor said that the principal has also refused to occupy the principal’s house provided for within the college premises since he was posted to the school. Occupying this house building, she said could make him come to terms with the plights of the students and not by living far away from the student he is meant to care for.

The parents are now calling on the Minister of Education and other relevant authorities to investigate these allegations and intervene to bring an end to the ceaseless sufferings meted out to these students every day.

When contacted, one of the teachers in the school dismissed such allegations as baseless and not founded on any evidence saying that there was nothing in the character of the school principal to warrant such charges.

Established in 1999, FGC Ohafia is one of the 104 unity colleges in the country owned by the federal government.
