Suarez could have become Liverpool's greatest ever - Fowler

Luis Suarez could have gone on to become the greatest player in Liverpool's history if he had decided to stay at Anfield last summer, according to club legend Robbie Fowler.

Suarez joined Barcelona in a €88 million deal after firing the Reds to the brink of a first league title in 24 years with 31 Premier League goals, only for Manchester City to eventually triumph by two points.

Liverpool have struggled in the absence of their talisman this season, losing six of their first 15 league games, scoring just 19 goals and exiting the Champions League at the group stage.

And while Suarez's final record at Liverpool stands at a highly impressive 82 goals in 133 appearances, Fowler believes the Uruguayan might have eclipsed Anfield greats Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush had he stayed.

"Every time a good striker has left Liverpool, a good striker has always come in," he told Goal. "That will always be the case. If he'd have stayed for a few more years, he could probably have been the best out of everyone [in the club's history].

"Sadly, he wasn't there for long. So to class him amongst the Ian Rushes and Roger Hunts of this world is very tough. If he had been there that long, he could have surpassed everyone, he's that good a player."

Liverpool are seven points adrift of fourth-placed West Ham as they prepare to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, but Fowler remains confident they will qualify for the Champions League ahead of their bitter rivals.

"It's not all doom and gloom for me," he insisted. "We're not playing well but we're six points from fourth place and if we get three points against Manchester United, we're only three points behind them.

"There's still a lot to play for. We're in the quarter-finals of one competition.

"I'm confident Liverpool can make the top four. I don't think the manager, players and owners at Liverpool will let the team slip away again if in the worst case scenario, they don't make the top four this season."

Asked for his prediction of this season's top four, Fowler replied: "Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool."
