‘Nigerian musicians dump gospel music because of money’ – Esther Oladoye

Nigeriangospel singer,Esther Taiwo David-Oladoye has said the reason most musicians dump gospel music for more commercial genres is because of the financial rewards or benefits that accrue from doing such forms of music.

In a recent chat with Tribune, the singer said: ‘I think the major thing that tempts people is finance. It is a tough battle out there. As a new singer in the industry, you are faced with a lot of financial obligations. You will want to have the best production; you would want to promote it in the media.

‘All of these cost money. Let’s not talk about personal needs. You do not know the scope of the financial investments until you get in and then you are required to take the next step and then you look around options and alternatives. There is also the perception that secular artistes are preferred to gospel artistes. By preferred, I mean that the music by these artistes receive more airplays than gospel music. Gospel songs are Sunday tonics.’
