Delta students withdraw sack threat against commissioner, seek reopening, fumigation of schools

The National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), yesterday, withdrew its two-week ultimatum to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to either sack or redeploy his Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, over some differences.

Its National President, Comrade Godwin Saturday, who spoke in Asaba, lamented their (students) continued stay at home owing to the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, noting that the disease had diverted the attention of most of them from academic work.

He lauded the governor for his developmental strides and measures taken so far to keep the scourge at bay in the state amid falling oil receipts.

Saturday said: “At the end of the meeting with state the government over the call to remove the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, all issues raised were critically reviewed and the 14-day ultimatum has been suspended. We are looking forward to the state to implement our demands, which are constant power supply, security on the campuses, fumigation among others.”

The NADESSTU chief, who also commended the administration for its continued support, nonetheless vowed that the association would not buckle in seeking better deal for students.

He pleaded for the reopening of schools, saying: “We are tired of staying at home. Most of us have become more burdens to our parents. We want to return to school to complete the academic calendar which COVID-19 has already truncated.”

Saturday continued: Since markets, churches and mosques can reopen, while schools can’t?

“We have demanded that all learning institutions, from the primary to tertiary levels, should be fumigated before reopening not only for COVID-19, but for all other things. It is over three months students vacated the schools, expectedly, rodents and reptiles have taken over the premises. So, fumigation is very important.”
