Making The Witcher Documentary Surprise Released On Netflix Today

In a surprise announcement, Netflix has released a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of The Witcher. The fantasy series debuted on Netflix late last year to mixed, yet positive reviews, and is now being brought back to viewers’ attention. The Witcher had already been renewed for season 2 before the series premiered.

The Witcher is an adaptation of the fantasy saga of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The books were previously adapted into a popular video game series that first appeared in 2007, creating a somewhat convoluted timeline that can be overwhelming to newcomers. On its own, however, the Netflix series functions as an independent story that is thoroughly high fantasy, and, of course, high budget.

Now, fans of The Witcher can see just how much production value went into creating the series. The newly released documentary, titled Making The Witcher, was announced by Netflix. This morning’s announcement included a trailer for the documentary that shows just some of the creative work that went into creating the show. The crew of The Witcher describes it as an opportunity to build an entirely new world from scratch. Among the highlighted aspects of the production are the fantasy creatures, which were a combination of prosthetics, practical effects, and VFX work that combined to create something really impressive. Actor Henry Cavill also talks about the complex sword fights in the show, some of which took several days of training. You can see the full trailer below.

Making The Witcher comes to Netflix just after news that the series has resumed production for season 2. Filming for the second season was halted in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, which inevitably caused the release date for the new episodes to be pushed back. This means that fans will have to wait a few extra months for new The Witcher content, meaning more time for them to forget about the series altogether.

With this “making of” documentary, Netflix has a great way to remind audiences of how much they enjoyed the series when it first aired, and get viewers excited for future The Witcher stories. This is especially good news for the recently announced prequel spin-off of the series, titled The Witcher: Blood Origin. If Netflix plays their cards right with this behind the scenes footage, they could even increase their viewership and get even more fans invested in Geralt’s story, making The Witcher an even bigger success than it already is.
