Netflix: The Best New TV Shows & Movies This Weekend (September 11)

This weekend, Netflix is adding a French movie, a new documentary, a horror movie, and a musical TV series. Although many theaters around the world are now reopening, many studios are still choosing to release their biggest titles on streaming platforms, while most viewers are also preferring to stay at home for a bit longer. Luckily for Netflix users, the streaming giant still has a long list of movies and TV shows coming to its catalogue, and it continues to add new content every week.

Last weekend, Netflix welcomed a bunch of licensed content, most notably all Back to the Future movies, the musical Grease, the comedies Magic Mike and Pineapple Express, and all seasons of the sitcom Sister, Sister. The platform also brought the rom-com Love Guaranteed, the drama series Young Wallander, the sci-fi series Away, and the psychological horror movie I’m Thinking Of Ending Things. This weekend won’t see much licensed content, but subscribers will get to enjoy the sci-fi movie Midnight Special and the animated movie How To Train Your Dragon 2.

Mignonnes

Mignonnes, translated to English as Cuties, is a French coming-of-age comedy-drama directed by Maïmouna Doucouré in her feature directorial debut. It follows Amy (Fathia Youssouf), an 11-year-old immigrant girl from Senegal who lives with her mother and two younger brothers in one of Paris’ poorest neighborhoods. After becoming fascinated by her neighbor Angelica’s (Médina El Aidi-Azouni) twerking clique, Amy begins to rebel against her conservative family traditions. Through this, Mignonnes explores internet culture as well as the hypersexualization of pre-adolescent girls.

The Social Dilemma

Netflix’s list of original documentaries continues to expand, and among its newest additions is The Social Dilemma. This documentary focuses on social media and its impact on society, which isn’t exactly positive. From conspiracy theories to teenage mental health issues, misinformation, and the growing dependence on digital platforms, The Social Dilemma explores the ugly side of social media and how it really works.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen

Three years after the release of The Babysitter, the sequel is finally here on Netflix this weekend. Titled The Babysitter: Killer Queen, it’s set two years after the events of the first movie, where Cole defeated the satanic cult led by his babysitter, Bee (Samara Weaving) – or that’s what he thought. As Cole continues to deal with the trauma of that night, the fact that no one believes him about what happened, and the issues that come with growing up, he comes across with some familiar forces of evil that have returned for revenge.

Julie And The Phantoms

Based on the Brazilian musical drama TV series of the same name, Netflix's Julie and the Phantoms follows a teenage girl (Madison Reyes) who finds her passion for music through a high-concept band of teen boys called The Phantoms – but the band has been dead for 25 years. Julie then helps them become the band they could never be, while they help her regain her confidence and love for music.
