Patty Jenkins admits that she's not confident Wonder Woman 1984 will make its December release date. Warner Bros. and DC Films' upcoming project has long been delayed. Even before the pandemic, it was delayed from November 2019 to June 2020. And now unfortunately, the chances of it getting pushed back are increasing every day considering the current coronavirus pandemic situation.

Bringing Gal Gadot's Diana Prince back on the big screen, Wonder Woman 1984 will see the Amazonian Princess in a new era: at the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. She's tipped to face a couple of new bad guys in Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal). Fortunately, she'll get some assistance from her romantic interest from the first film, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) who miraculously returns from the dead. At this point, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the project, and it seems like fans may have to wait a little while longer before they can get some answers.

Speaking with Variety regarding the nearing release of Wonder Woman 1984, Jenkins was cautious about talking with certainty. Acknowledging how volatile the situation is regarding the global health pandemic, the director admits she's not confident the sequel will hit theaters before the year ends. That said, she remains hopeful they can stick with the movie's current timetable. She said:

I don’t think anybody can be confident of anything right now. We just don’t know what the course of COVID is going to be like. ... [Wonder Woman 1984's December release date] feels totally possible to me.

If Wonder Woman 1984 is once again pushed back, it will be its fifth time to be delayed. The movie was originally scheduled to release in November 2019 but it was pushed it back to June 2020 because Warner Bros. wanted a summer release. Since then, it's been delayed three more times due to coronavirus, first to August, second to October, and then its current release date on Christmas day. It's worth noting that just earlier this month, Warner Bros. moved its whole slate to varying degrees, leaving only Wonder Woman 1984 as their major release this year. In conjunction with this, Jenkins also previously debunked rumors that they're contemplating releasing Wonder Woman 1984 sequel on streaming, like HBO Max. She said that it's not even being considered at the moment as they want audiences to experience the movie in cinemas, not to mention also help struggling theaters.

At this point, it's best to be ready for the possibility that Wonder Woman 1984 won't be able to stick to its December release date. Given how serious the situation is with coronavirus especially with a second wave looming, Warner Bros. would be better off finding the film a more plausible rollout schedule than risking dropping it in a couple of months. Needless to say, the studio and everyone involved with Wonder Woman 1984 don't want the movie to endanger potential audiences by drawing them to theaters when it may not be safe. Though as Tenet's low box office proved, it doesn't seem folks are ready to venture out to theaters just yet anyway. It remains to be seen what Warner Bros. decides to do with the Wonder Woman 1984 release date.
