Three South Africans celebrities who enjoy Gambling

South Africa is a diverse nation that enjoys gambling like the rest of the world. This country features bustling cities in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Many of those who live in this country like to indulge in gambling, as an activity.

Gambling allows those who enjoy this pastime, as a break from their routine. It provides an adrenaline rush for those participating.  Plus, it gives them excitement, as they are able to experience moments of excitement and win additional cash.

According to Business Insider, South Africa dominates the African gambling scene as 80% of revenue is generated through the gambling scene. Plus 90% of South Africans participate in a form of gambling, as approximately $2 billion is generated yearly.

There are 13 casinos in South Africa through their eight provinces. GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World is the largest casino in the country, as it is located in Cape Town.

This Casino features 79 table games. Plus, there are 10 poker tables, and 2,563 gaming and video poker machines, according to the World Casino Directory.

Sports Betting is the favourite betting form in the country. There are 39 casinos in South Africa, but online gambling is on the rise in the country. In this list, you can find famous online casinos that offer no deposit bonuses.

Here are three famous South Africans, who enjoy gambling:

Charlize Theron

Theron is a Hollywood actress, who was born in South Africa, has talked about gambling through her love of poker. She has mentioned in interviews that she is a gambler.

In 2017, Theron hosted the inaugural amfAR Charity Poker Tournament

Hansie Cronje

Cronje is a legendary cricket player, who was previously a member of their national cricket team. He enjoyed gambling; however, he will be most remembered for a scandal that featured match-fixing.

His gambling activities were more than just for entertainment. Yet, it proves that gambling can have a huge impact on a person's life, despite being a prominent figure.

In April 2000, Cronje, along with Herschelle Gibbs, Nicke Bose, and Pieter Strydom were implicated in the match-fixing scandal. Initially, he received a lifetime ban in September 2021. However, that ruling was dismissed one month later.

Ernie Els

Els is a South African golfer and has had success throughout his career, as he has won several major championships. Like Theron, Els' form of gambling is through poker.

He has admitted to participating in poker tournaments, including charity events. He also has a poker tournament through his Ernie Els for Autism organization.

Els has seen betting for many years throughout his golf career. He also enjoys gambling on the side.

“Guys have been betting on each other forever, since I’ve been out here,” said Ernie Els. “Spectators, like this guy and his buddy would be like, 'Oh, I bet you a dollar he doesn’t make it.' And we can hear that. But now that it’s legal, I’m sure the stakes are going to be even higher.”

Conclusion

South Africans, whether they are a celebrity or common human beings, have a diverse background in finding excitement through gambling. There is an allure to gambling, whether they are playing games at a casino, horse racing or sports betting or through an online platform. Gambling is a recreation and social interaction for many; however, for others, it is part of their livelihood, as they make wagers for a living.

South African officials have put policies in place to govern gambling and promote responsible practices to ensure that it is safe for all, as long as they are eligible to participate. Gambling should be performed in moderation with limits. It should be done within one's financial means.
