The Growing Relationship Between Sports & Gambling on the Silver Screen

Gambling and sports-related betting have long been fascinating subjects for screenplay writers, with the resultant movies captivating audiences with their dramatic themes filled with high-stakes storylines and unpredictable conclusions.

In classic films or modern blockbusters, the relationship between sports and gambling has meant filmmakers can explore cinematic combinations that include risk, greed, and redemption. With the growing popularity of online gambling and betting sites alike, such opportunities should increase in future offerings on the silver screen.

Future Cinematic Projects

Future movie themes could target the legality of gambling and sports betting, especially in certain US states. In Arizona, for example, online sports betting is legal, while remote casinos are outlawed. As Techopedia's Ciaran McEneaney explains further:

"While online sports betting has been regulated in the state since 2021, there are no such provisions for online casino gambling. This means that the only options available right now are offshore casinos…"

In other US states, sports betting remains illegal, which means the only way to wager on your favorite team is by going the offshore route. Adding the emergence of cryptocurrencies, which many online sportsbooks and all crypto casinos accept as payment methods, to potential film plots could boost the intrigue of future plots that include modern gambling and sports betting that much further.

But back to the existing movies. We'll examine the portrayal of gambling and sports in cinema, citing examples from notable films that have left indelible impressions on audiences.

The Hustler (1961)

Robert Rossen's "The Hustler" delves into the psychology of gambling and the promise of easy money while playing pool, offering a compelling portrayal of the gambling lifestyle's risks and rewards. This classic film explores the world of high-stakes gambling through pool hustling, with Paul Newman in the lead role as "Fast" Eddie Felson, a talented but reckless pool player.

"The Hustler" follows Felson's journey as he joins and navigates the seedy underworld of sharks and hustlers. The Black-and-White production won two Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Art and Set Direction.

The Color of Money (1986)

Twenty-five years after the release of "The Hustler," director Martin Scorsese brought movie-goers its sequel, "The Color of Money." Paul Newman reignites his role as the now older and wiser Eddie Felson as he takes on a protege - Vincent Lauria, a talented but undisciplined young pool player played by Tom Cruise.

Like its predecessor, "The Color of Money" is set against the backdrop of the high-stakes world of pool hustling, but one that has moved with the times and become more professional. "The Color of Money" explores themes of rivalry, ambition, and the lure of easy money in the gambling world. Newman won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his recreation of "Fast" Eddie Felson.

Eight Men Out (1988)

"Eight Men Out" is based on the real events that transpired in the 1919 Black Sox scandal, where members of the Chicago White Sox baseball team were accused of a gambling conspiracy aimed at throwing the World Series.

With a cast that includes John Cusack, Charlie Sheen, D.B. Sweeney, and Michael Rooker, "Eight Men Out" highlights ethical dilemmas and moral ambiguities existing in the sports gambling environment. Directed by John Sayles, the film is highly rated on several movie review websites.

Two for the Money (2005)

Directed by D.J. Caruso, "Two for the Money" is a drama centering on sports betting and professional handicapping. With Al Pacino portraying Walter Abrams, a charismatic sports betting consultant, and Matthew McConaughey playing his protege, Brandon Lang, the film explores fluctuations in the gambling industry, including the dangers of unchecked greed and ambition.

Also starring Rene Russo and Jeremy Piven, the fictionalized "Two for the Money" offers a glimpse into the allure of quick profit and the more cutthroat areas of the sports betting fraternity. While filled with Hollywood heavyweights, "Two for the Money" has received mediocre public reviews, but will interest those personally involved in gambling and sports betting.

Uncut Gems (2019)

"Uncut Gems" sees Adam Sandler cast as a charismatic but reckless New York City jeweler with a predisposition for high-risk bets. Under the direction of Josh and Benny Safdie, the film follows Sandler's character, Howard Ratner, as he desperately attempts to juggle mounting debts and volatile relationships, with a rare black opal being his potential ticket to ruin or salvation.

A pulse-pounding thriller, "Uncut Gems" immerses viewers in the chaos that high-stakes betting and underground gambling can become, offering an immersive and visceral portrayal of the thrill of sports betting. As the winner of 28 international awards, "Uncut Gems" is revered in the film industry and among moviegoers alike.

Final Thoughts

The popularity of sports on the global stage, coupled with the quicker and more convenient options available to sports bettors and gamblers, provides filmmakers with much ammunition to target both these highly appreciated sectors of modern entertainment in their cinematic offerings.

We can expect feature films including a combination of both sports and gambling to increase as major motion picture production companies realize the financial benefits of themes based on the two. For moviegoers, sports participants, and gamblers, this means a plethora of enjoyable entertainment is on the horizon!
