The up-tempo song was written and produced by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, and released on November 1, 1994, as the lead single from the album.

After its release, All I Want for Christmas Is You topped the US Billboard Holiday 100, US Billboard Holiday Digital Songs and UK R&B Charts, as well as charts in nine (9) other countries.

The single charts every holiday season since its original release and has been certified 3x platinum in Canada and Australia, 2x platinum in the US and Italy and platinum in Spain, Denmark and New Zealand.

In 2010, Carey re-recorded the song for her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You.
