Commotion Rocks Abuja as Koro Boys Murder 59-year-old Man Over Football

Shuaibu Tijani, a 59-year-old man, has been killed by some miscreants popularly known as Koro boys at Tunga Maje, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory.

According to Punch Metro, Tijani, who hailed from Ofejiji-Oganenugu in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, allegedly died during an attack on him by the Koro boys last Tuesday, but the police have yet to make an arrest in connection with the incident.

One of the deceased’s sons, Sani, said his father was attacked by about 12 hoodlums who stormed their residence at Angwa Bassa, with the aim of attacking him and his brother, Salam, following a disagreement during a football game.

He said, “When we were playing football at a field in Tunga Maje on Tuesday, a boy came and he was asked to be the goalkeeper for my team but I declined because he was not too good. I decided to be the goalkeeper and the boy insulted me.

“My younger brother, Salam, who was at the field asked the boy to stop insulting me, saying I was not his age mate. The Koro boys started threatening us, boasting that they would come for us later.

“Around 8pm, they arrived at our residence, about 12 of them, with cutlasses, knives and some of them were holding sticks. They started looking for Salam who was at a pharmacy store watching television at the time. I quickly ran to him, called him out and urged him to go and hide in the room.

“But as soon as I came out, I saw my father advancing towards the boys to ask them what they wanted. They attacked him and he fell down, hitting his head on a stone.”

According to the wife of the deceased, Habibat, the police officers at Tunga Maje police post were reluctant to arrest the assailants “because they were afraid of the Koro boys.”

She said an officer assisted her to take her husband to the Zuba police station, but he died on the way. The widow called on the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to ensure that the killers of her husband were brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Investigating Police Officer, Alhassan Dan-Fulani confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate.

He added that the police were yet to make arrests, noting that detectives were on the trail of the suspects.

“It is a case of homicide. We have to be careful on how we carry out the arrest so that the culprits do not escape,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tijani has been buried in his home town, Ofejiji-Oganenugu, on Thursday in accordance with Islamic rites.
