Buhari Charges Eaglets To Win U17 World Cup

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has charged the Nigerian U17 boys' football team to win the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile.

The 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup begins today in Chile, with Nigeria, as defending champions, squaring up against the United States of America in their group opener in Santiago.

In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari wished the team well and urged them to return home with the trophy like they've done before.

"President Muhammadu Buhari extends his best wishes for a triumphant outing to the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria who are in Chile to participate in this year's under-17 FIFA World Cup Tournament," the statement's opening paragraph read.

As the tournament opens tomorrow (today), President Buhari urges the Golden Eaglets to do their utmost best to match the outstanding performance of their victorious predecessors who have won the competition four times including the inaugural edition in 1985 and the last tournament in 2013.

Incidentally, Buhari was Nigeria's head of state the first time they won the trophy in 1985, and has promised the governments support to the team in their quest for a fifth title.

The President assures the Golden Eaglets and their handlers of the full support of the Federal Government and all Nigerians as they strive to bring more sporting glory to their fatherland by outplaying all their opponents in Chile and winning the Under-17 World Cup for a record fifth time," another part of the statement read.

After the group opener against the USA today, Nigeria will then face hosts Chile on the 20th and Croatia three days later.
