7 Skin Care Rules It's Time To Break

Every girl has her own skin care routine, but there are also many universal rules that are supposed to work for everybody. However, a large part of these rules are actually myths that can do more harm than good for your skin. Find out which skin care myths it’s time to stop believing in and find everything you need to look and feel flawless on Jiji.

1. Every area needs its own product

We are conditioned to think that we need separate skin products for face, eyes, area around the lips, and neck, but the truth is that in most cases all these products will have the same active ingredients. It’s okay to use different products if you want to pamper yourself, but you can also successfully use a single skin care product all over your face.

2. Shop for your age

Most skin care brands offer lines created specifically for different age groups, for example, 18+ or 35+. However, a much more effective approach is shopping for your skin needs. Women can have acne-prone skin at 35 and early wrinkles at 25, which is why it’s best to take your skin’s condition into account.

3. Dark skin doesn’t need sunscreen

Ladies who are blessed with chocolate skin often believe that the higher melanin count of their skin protects them from harmful UV rays. This is one of the most dangerous skin care myths, as all skin types and colours are equally prone to sun damage and even skin cancer, which is why good sunscreen is an absolute necessity.

4. Don’t wear makeup and you’ll age more slowly

There are numerous factors affecting the speed of your aging process, from genetics to your diet. Luckily, wearing makeup isn’t one of them. You can wear as much makeup as you want and as often as you like - just don’t forget to remove it before sleep with a gentle makeup remover.

5. Multi-purpose products work better

If you come across a skin care product that promises to solve all of your skin problems at once, it’s better to take this claim with a grain of salt. By targeting one problem at a time with a product that is specifically designed for treating that problem, you will achieve a much better result.

6. Alcohol is a great cleanser

It’s not uncommon even for expensive skin care products to contain alcohol - in fact, most cleansing solutions for acne and oily skin contain some amount of alcohol. However, alcohol is the one skin care ingredient that needs to be used with caution: when used too often on skin, it can lead to dehydration, dullness, and breakouts.

7. The more expensive a product is, the better

We often consider skin care products to be somewhat of a luxury, which is why it’s a common belief that expensive products work like magic, while affordable skin care hardly does its job. The truth is that cheap skin care products from respectable brands contain the same active ingredients as the expensive ones, but spend less on packaging and advertising.
