MARIA

I heard that life has its Up’s and downs just like the beat of ones heart. Life has to take us up so we could come down stronger but they’ve been mere make believes that I’ve held onto but have never seen a prove. Life keeps taking me down and down, everyday seems deeper.

All my life I’ve held up the value of family and relationship , I’ve kept to it but nothing changes and it gets me thinking, how much could one possibly give, how much must one sacrifice to be happy.

I’ve given my all but my life’s rollercoaster has refused to leave this pothole that I’ve found me in. Once again, I’m staring at my husband , my friend and confidant. More than a husband, he was my best friend. We could talk about any and everything. I could remember how we always couldn’t wait to be in each other’s arm everyday after work. He was my muse, my reason to wake up each day with a bright smile on my face. We shared everything and now I’m wondering how things became this sour. I mean, we were so happy right before we had our daughter Mercedes.

She was a parcel of joy sent to us but slowly, I felt my Steve slipping away from me – keeping late nights and the days he came back early, he remains glued to his phone. He never did prostitutes but lately, he seems to enjoy their company so much and it kills me no matter how much I try to over look.

He requested I quit my job and a promising career I had – more like a command than it was a request. I did cause I love my husband and that was how much I was willing to sacrifice. He stopped at nothing to push my friends away and I didn’t complain cause he was always there for me.

But what happened after all this, he became a new person. I need my husband back and I’m willing to sacrifice more.

Still in my thoughts, Steve’s phone beeped and he picked up his phone to take a look at it. When he finished replying, he dropped his phone and laid back on the bed to sleep.

‘ I thought you were at sleep. ‘

‘ I know you’re not deaf to know my phone just beeped or wait, were you planning on going through my phone? ‘

‘ You know I wouldn’t stoop so low. ‘

‘ Your issue to deal with then. ‘

He turned to sleep.

‘ Can we talk? ‘

‘ No, I’m tired. ‘

‘ Please… We could never sort anything out like this and you of all people know that things are not going well with us anymore. ‘

‘ I know you have nothing important to say to me and besides, I don’t see anything wrong with us – except of course, if you have an issue and if you do, sort it out yourself cause I’m not interested. ‘

His reply was so cold that I could feel my heart freezing with pain.

‘ This relationship, does it mean nothing to you? Our family, ain’t it worth saving? ‘

‘ Saving? Who’s in danger. Look Maria, please go to bed and stop nagging. Goodnight. ‘ He said dismissively.

‘ Honey, have I done anything wrong that I don’t know about? If I have, then I’m sincerely sorry. Any way I must have hurt you this bad, I’m sorry. Please let it go and let’s build our family, our love. I’m begging you. ‘

‘ Seriously Maria? Our family? Our love? So you think this ‘ he sat up waving his hand in the air.

‘ this thing, like you and me, family? Lying on the bed, love? You’ve lost it. ‘

‘ Steve, what happened to us? We used to be so happy. What happened to you? I’ve done every single thing you’ve asked of me, I’ve loved you and our daughter and yet, you treat me like this? What is wrong? I’m willing to make amends. ‘

He stared at me for a while and laughed.

‘ For goodness sakes! And so what if you’ve done everything I’ve asked of you? Weren’t you supposed to? You know what? I’m done with this aimless conversation. ‘

He stood up, picked a pillow and blanket and opt to leave the room.

‘ If you leave this room, you won’t meet me alive by morning. ‘ I threatened.

He stood at a spot and turned.

‘ And you think I won’t be happy? That would be liberation for me! ‘

He stormed out of the room as I collapsed on the bed and cried my world. I’ve lost it all, everything was gone.

‘ You promised! You promised me Steve! It was forever! ‘

I shouted.

It was a Saturday and a work free day. April decided to go for a morning jog around her new neighborhood before joining her parents for breakfast later in the morning cause her Dad had requested to see her.

She felt this unusual happiness as the early morning breeze graced her skin. She kept running as Celine Dion’s my heart will go on played for her ear phone. She jogged for a while before heading back to her house.

When she got home, she took a shower. Did a little laundry, arranged her kitchen before heading out around 9am.

The road was clear as it was a Saturday morning, she wondered why her Dad has requested to see her though it’s been quite a while they last saw each other since she moved into her own apartment.

Suddenly, she noticed someone waving at her car to stop. It was unusual of her but she stopped anyway and a man in his late thirties walked down to her window.

‘ Um… Good morning ‘

He greeted.

‘ How can I help you? ‘

She replied sternly

( Grumpy lady… At least, you could have replied to my greeting.) he muttered within himself.

‘ It’s so not my thing to be a bother to anyone but you see, my car broke down and I realised I’ve lost my wallet and phone. Please, can you drop me down at the junction in front, I can find my way home from there. ‘ he replied.

His story sounded too fake to her and she wasn’t willing to take chances – considering the fact that there are fraudsters everywhere willing to do anything for money.

‘ I’m sorry I can’t… ‘

He cut her short before she could finish her statement.

‘ I know you’re trying to be security conscious but I’m not that kind of a person. ‘

True to his words, he doesn’t look like one but what can you expect? She thought to herself

‘ It’s not written on the face. ‘

‘ I know but if you leave, I’ll be stranded here. That won’t be so good for your conscience. ‘

‘ Ow! Really? That’s your way of begging? ‘

‘ What else should I say? Please help me. ‘

He said and made a baby like face.

‘ I’m sorry. ‘ she replied and drove off.

‘ How can a lady be so grumpy and hardhearted. ‘ he said and went back to lean on his car thinking of the next line of action.

‘ Hey! ‘

He heard a lady’s voice and he raised his head.

‘ Grumpy lady! ‘ he retorted before he could even stop the word from leaving his mouth.

‘ Really! I heard that! ‘

‘ I’m sorry. I couldn’t help it. ‘

‘ Where are you headed? ‘

( The grumpy lady, not so bad at all. ) he muttered and smiled.

‘ Trinity Garden Estate. ‘

‘ Get in! I could spare a few minutes. ‘

She replied and he got in.

‘ By the way, I’m Gabriel but my friends call me Gabi . ‘

‘ No need for the formality , I’m not your friend .’

‘ ( really? Okay?) so what’s your name. ‘

‘ Call me grumpy lady. ‘

‘ Seriously? Okay, I’m sorry I called you that. ‘

‘ Can we put an end to this conversation? I don’t even wish to see you ever again. ‘

‘ No, that’s not true cause I’m not dying anytime soon so you don’t have to be so grumpy. ‘

He replied getting on her nerves this time.

‘ For the love of God ‘ she mumbled to herself.
