The Private Driver (The 2nd Month)

It is now two months since Ojo traveled out

Nigeria.

Though, he has been in constant communication with Dami, this did not in any

way make her to feel less lonely. She needed the

physical presence of her husband and she was

not getting it. Loneliness drove her into the arms

of her private driver the very first day that her

husband left the country.

Damí's relationship with the driver did not end on the first night after the did something in the car. The relationship continued and now, Dami was suspecting that she is carrying the driver's baby.

It is the last week of the second month and her body was giving her strange signals. Dami decided to conduct a test on herself and it came out positive.

"This can't be happening. So, I'm carrying the driver's baby? I must be dreaming." Dami said to herself in her bathroom. She was holding the small cup which contained her sample on her left hand and the pregnancy test strip on the other. She used the bright torchlight on her phone to point at the test strip to be sure she was seeing properly. There was no mistake, because there were two stripes on the tiny strip, meaning she had taken in.

"I will go to the hospital tomorrow to run another test. There must be a mistake somewhere. I hope it comes out negative." Dami said. She started weeping and this attracted the attention of Mimi, the housemaid who rushed to the bathroom to check on her.

"Why are you crying ma? I hope everything is alright?" Mimi asked, as she knocked on the bathroom door. Dami quickly opened it. She was still crying and using a white towel to wipe the tears in her eyes. She looked highly distressed and Mimi could see that all was not well with Dami.

"What is the matter ma? Please, stop crying. Whatever it is could be sorted out." Mimi said. She did not know why Dami was weeping and she was deeply worried.

"There is no problem Mimi. No problem at all. Don't worry, I will be fine. I'm just missing my husband. It has been very difficult for me to stay alone in his absence. No matter how I pretend, I still miss him so badly. I do hope he comes back soon to pick me up because this loneliness is not easy to bear at all." Dami responded to Mimi. Mimi tried her best to condole her without truly knowing the source of her tears.

The next day, Dami went to the hospital and the test confirmed that she was truly carrying a baby in her womb. The baby belongs to the driver, there was no doubts about that in her mind. He was the only man that browsed her website since her husband left the country. She knew it was wrong to get pregnant for another man other than her husband, so she was deeply troubled by the situation.

"What am I going to do? Should I keep the baby? If I'm keeping the baby, how am I going to explain this to my husband when he returns from the UK? I'm finished!" Dami said when she returned from the hospital that evening. She was sitting in the living room and thinking of the next step to take. Her phone rang and she picked it up. The caller turned out to be her mother-in-law.

"Hello my dear. Good evening. How are you doing? It has been a long time." Her mother-in- law said over the phone.

"Good evening ma. I'm fine! Everything is perfect. It is not easy but I'm coping. My husband calls me frequently, so I don't miss him much." Dami said calmly, trying to take control of her emotions. She did not want the woman to know that she had been crying all day because she got pregnant for her driver. It was hard to hide her emotions because she was almost choking. She needed to tell someone about it, but certainly not her mother-in-law.

"That's nice to hear. I'm going to visit you next month. I don't know the particular day yet, but I will surely be in your house next month. I'm just coming to see how you are doing and also to bring some foodstuff to you." Dami's mother-in- law said in a lovely way. Dami knows the woman to be a caring and dotting old lady who had always given her everything she needs. But Dami knew that this particular visit would be problematic to her because her secret would be uncovered.

"Thanks for your concern ma. But I will not be available next month. I will be travelling to Lagos to undergo a one month training on baking. I'm learning to be a baker so that I will stop being idle. I have been staying idle for a long time. When I'm done with the training, I will open a bakery so that I will be going out and making money in my husband's absence." Dami said, but she was actually telling lies. She had no intention of becoming a baker and she had no intention of travelling anywhere. She was just trying to avoid her mother-in-law's visit.

"Alright dear! You have a wonderful idea. It's fine, but that means I will come in two months' time. By that time, you must have completed your training. I can't wait to see you and to eat a cake you baked. I know by that time, you must have learned how to bake properly." The woman tells Dami. Dami knew that the lie she told about cake has put her in another trouble. Now, the woman will be visiting her house hoping to eat freshly baked cake.

"Alright ma. Please, take good care of yourself for me. Goodbye ma. See you in two months time." Dami said over the phone as both of them hung up. Immediately after she hung up, she turned her eyes leftwards and saw Mimi, the housemaid waiting for her.

"I picked this in the bathroom ma. Are you pregnant?" The housemaid asked. She was holding the pregnancy test strip and showing it to Dami who was surprised and totally startled.

She thought she had thrown the strip away, but it turned out she forgot it on the floor.

"I'm not pregnant! Give that to me! From today onwards, my room and the bathroom are out of bounds for you. You should learn how to respect people's privacy." Dami said angrily as she leaves the room.
