Steve Bruce says he was "pleased" by Newcastle's reaction to their Premier League defeat to Brighton, as they recorded their biggest ever competitive away win at Morecambe in the Carabao Cup.

The Premier League side outclassed their League Two opponents scoring five times before the break, for the first time since 1993.

Joelinton scored twice for the Magpies, with Miguel Almiron, Jacob Murphy, Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles and a Sam Lavelle own goal adding to the tally.

"When you have a disappointing result, the one thing you have to do is respond and that's what pleased me more than anything," said the Newcastle manager.

"The response, the attitude towards it on an awful night, nobody here. Some of the football, particularly the first half an hour, was terrific. I've said it many, many times now, we're capable of winning five games, which gets you maybe to a cup final."

Newcastle now travel to League Two Newport in the fourth round, with all ties due to take place in the week commencing 28 September.
