The opening game of Group D at the World Cup witnessed title favourites, Argentina, against fan favourites, Iceland, at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow. Or, veterans against debutants. But after 90 minutes and five minutes of stoppage time at the end, the minnows came out the happier having held Argentina to a 1-1 draw. The 2014 World Cup runners-up took the lead courtesy Sergio Aguero before Finbogason equalised just two minutes later. Lionel Messi had the chance to put Argentina in the lead in the second half but he missed his third penalty in national colours to see off a disappointing start to the extravaganza.
