Susan ekerete - Season 1 - Episode 17

Susan stared at her phone, her surprise turning into hope. If Asuquo was calling her, surely he was fine? She could tell him to contact the police about his whereabouts and then this entire nightmare could end without getting any more ugly. Her finger moved to click on the answer button, but another thought stopped her. This time it was one of fear. What if it was not her ex-husband on the other end of the line? She had heard that kidnappers usually contacted the close family members of the people they abducted. What if she was about to pick up the call and hear a demand for millions from a rough voice, with a threat to kill Asuquo if she didn’t comply? What would she say?Susan began to shake at the thought of kidnappers and threats. Her fingers trembled so hard, the phone tumbled out of her hands and on to the plush rug.

By the time she stooped and retrieved the phone from where it had fallen, it had stopped ringing. She cursed under her breath at herself for being so clumsy and considered her next step.Deciding she needed to call the police, she raced to her purse, rooting around in it for the card of the police inspector, Samson….she found the card and checked his full name. Samson Udofia. She hefted the phone, noticing her fingers were still trembling as she punched in the number on the policeman’s card. Her call was picked up on the first ring.“Good evening. Inspector Samson on the line.” The voice was drowned out by other loud voices, but Susan recognized it as thevoice of the friendly policeman.“Oh thank goodness, Samson.” She said. “I think Asuquo’s kidnappers just called me and… well anyway the call ended before I could pick it, but I received a call from his second phone…”“Miss Susan Ekerette?” the policeman interrupted, his voice sharpening. Instantlythe noise around him ended. Susan assumed he had signalled his colleagues to stop talking. “Are you sure it’s your yourex-husband’s?”“Yes, I have the number saved.” Susan said, using her hand to wipe the nervous sweat off her forehead. “What do I do if they call back?”“Listen madam, just send me that second number immediately.” The policeman saidtersely. “We can run a trace on it and find him very quickly. I would advise you not topick the call at all. Just hang on till we get to your home. We’re on our way. Text me that number at once.”“Okay, but…” Susan pulled the phone awayfrom her ear as she heard the disconnecting tone. She immediately copied Asuquo’s second number and pasted it in an sms box before sending it to the police number. She felt relieved that the police were coming to her house to talk to the kidnappers; she didn’t think shecould have handled the matter alone. She hesitated for a moment after the text was sent, then began to dial Michael’s number, deciding she would feel better if he was here at the same time the policemen were. She was still dialling when the call enteredher phone and she unwittingly pressed theanswer button.“Jesus!” Susan shrieked, and then clamped her hand over her mouth. She stared at the lighted screen with trepidation. It was Asuquo’s number again; she could see the time read-out already counting down. She wished she had had more time to talk to Inspector Samson and get his advice on how to interact with kidnappers, but she resigned herself to fate and slowly pressed the phone to her ear, trying to still her galloping heart.“Hello?” she said hesitantly into the phone, her voice shaky.

A rushed voice answered her. “Hello? Is that Susan? I need to…”“Jesus, Asuquo!” Susan exclaimed in reliefas she recognized her ex-husband’s voice. She flung the Inspector’s card away in annoyance and plopped into a chair, watching as the card settled on Pooh the teddy bear’s head. “What is all this? Wherethe hell are you? ”“Look, Susan, I can’t tell you that. Just save this my second number. And I want you to…”“What do you mean you can’t tell me that?” Susan fumed. “You just disappear like that and leave everyone scared and in trouble. Look, you have to call the police; they are looking for you…”“The police?” Asuquo interrupted. “Why are the police looking for me?”Susan felt her exasperation change to anger. “That’s your problem, Asuquo.

You only think of yourself. The police are looking for you and they are ready to blame anyone and everyone for your disappearance. Did you think the fact that your jeep was abandoned in a deserted area would not attract any attention?”There was silence from the other end of the line, broken only by Asuquo’s loud breathing.“Asuquo…” Susan started heatedly.“Jesus…what’s going on here?” Asuquo muttered. The thread of fear in his voice sent a chill running down the back of Susan’s neck. “What the hell is going on?”“Asuquo, you’re not making any sense.” Susan said evenly, ignoring the fear her ex-husband had transferred to her. “Just come in and explain what happened to thepolice.”“Susan, I’m sitting in my jeep right now. I’m not missing. A couple of men tried to stop me forcibly the other day but only succeeded in getting my phone.

I think they are the ones who came to see you.”Susan stared at the card resting on the teddy bear’s plush head, eyes growing wide. “Are you saying Inspector Samson Udofia and the other policemen are fakes?”Asuquo groaned on the other end of the phone.

When he spoke, his voice was trembling in a way Susan had never heardbefore.“Samson Udofia came to see you? Abasi mi! I’m a dead man.”
