Susan stood stock-still, hand pressed to her chest. She could feel her heart hammering away beneath her fingers, in the grip of fear seeing Samson Udofia hadcaused. She glanced behind the man, seeing the other policemen move closer. How had they managed to reach her house without her hearing their car pull up?“We took the liberty of parking the vehicle we came in a few houses away.” InspectorSamson said, uncannily answering her question. His eyes stayed rooted on her face as he proffered her keys to her. “We didn’t mean to startle you, Miss Ekerette.”Susan collected her keys warily, knowing he could see that her hands were shaking. His gaze moved downwards and her eyes followed, resting on the bag clutched in her hands.“So, were you going somewhere?”Susan swallowed nervously, but the germ of an idea had occurred to her. “Er… yes, actually I was.”When Inspector Samson’s only response was a raised brow, she continued. “I was actually going to see my boyfriend, Michael. You know my daughter’s travelled and sometimes it gets lonely staying here all by myself…”“Michael Davies is your boyfriend?” the policeman interrupted, his brow furrowing slightly. Susan could almost see the suspicious wheels turning in his head. “Earlier today, you didn’t say he was your boyfriend, just your daughter’s mathematics tutor.”“Well, you didn’t ask me.” Susan said quickly. “I saw no need to volunteer the information. Besides, I’m sure the neighbours already told you as much.”They both stared at each other for a few seconds. Susan tried to keep the fact that she was lying off her face. After a few seconds, a look of grudging respect entered the man’s eyes. Susan guessed heknew she was lying, but also knew he had no way to disprove it. He almost seemed pleased, as though he had found a good chess player.“Fair enough, Miss Ekerette. The neighbours did imply as much. But still, I’m surprised. I thought you were going to wait so we could take any calls from your ex-husband’s kidnappers together. Are you no longer worried about that? Did they call?”Susan remembered Asuquo’s warning about the man standing in front of her andthe fine hairs at the back of her neck prickled.

She looked around at her environs. It was quiet, almost deserted; most people were already in their homes for the night. She knew these crooked policemen could simply bundle her into their jeep and zoom off and she would be unable to put up a meaningful resistance. She had to give an Oscar-worthy performance if she was to wriggle out of the tight situation she had found herself in.“I received no more calls, Inspector Samson. But thinking of being here all alone scared me.” she shuddered dramatically. “So I decided to go be with my…”“Your boyfriend, yes.” the policeman completed her sentence.

A thin smile danced on his lips and Susan knew he hadseen through her act. She jumped as he reached forward and gripped her bag. “But I guess you have no need to be afraid, hmm? We’re here now, we can protect you. So let’s all go back inside and wait for any phone calls…”Inspector Samson turned as the headlights of a car suddenly washed over them. The other policemen turned to the car with scowls on their faces, squinting as the vehicle drew closer and swung to a stop at the front of Susan’s house. When the car door opened and Michael stuck a jean-covered leg out, Susan gave a wordless cry of relief. He stepped out fully, straightening out in all his six foot plus glory. Susan had never been happier to see any man before. She had heard of knights in shining armour, but at that moment, Michael was her knight in shining denim. Before the policeman in front of her could react, she wrenched her bag free and moved quickly past him, making her way quickly to Michael. He strode towards her too, a frown on his face as he noticed the policemen standing outside her apartment.

They were unmoving; a frozen tableau of uniformed menace, staring at him with animosity. He ignored them, moving towards the approaching Susan.“What the hell is going on ..?”He was interrupted by Susan stepping intohis arms. He paused, trying to contain his surprise and immediate pleasure as she hugged him tightly.“Hey, hey, are you okay?” he asked, pullingback and examining her face. He glanced quickly at the policemen standing in front of her house before returning his attentionto her.

She stepped closer to him. “I’m fine now, you idiot. But I would be better if you kissed me.” she hissed in a low voice.Michael tried to pull back again, befuddled. “What? I don’t underst….”Susan didn’t wait for him to reach the right conclusion about what was going on.With an impatient muted sigh, she pulled him back and pressed her body fully against his. Before his loud gasp of surprise escaped his mouth, she covered his lips with hers.
