Susan ekerete - Season 1 - Episode 24

☆☆

Dedicated to qeenvick for her birthday
Susan felt her throat go dry and her eyes grow wider. She clamped a palm to her mouth to stifle a loud gasp of fear as various ideas about the identity to the intruder in Michael’s house flitted through her mind. Had all their running been in vain?Despite her trepidation, she looked aroundcuriously. It was her first time in the houseof the man who had just become so important to her, and she was not surprised to find it was a reflection of Michael himself.

The apartment was a single story duplex, barely furnished but clean and filled with gleaming furniture. She could see his strict and non-flamboyant character in the spare choice of colours he had used in the entirespace.

What wasn’t metal or wood was either black or white. His dark curtains hung still in the airless space, plunging thehouse into dimness reminiscent of early evening. She wished she had more time toexamine the house; it was just like Michael. Stylish, darkly attractive, yet efficient.Michael pressed her hand and she was reminded of the new situation they had found themselves in. They exchanged a look and stared up, both facing the stairwell that led to the bedrooms upstairs.“Do you think it’s Samson Udofia?” she whispered to Michael. He turned and looked at her, her worry reflected in his eyes as he shrugged.“I guess it could be.” He responded softly, and then stiffened, pushing her behind himprotectively as a door creaked in space above them. Susan peeked over his shoulder, poised to flee as a dark shape moved into the gloom at the head of the stairs. As the person moved down and closer to the light, she felt the tension leave Michael’s body abruptly. But it was replaced by something else. The way his body whipped into attention was tinged with shock.“Unless, of course, it’s something worse.” Michael gritted out. Curious and confused,Susan squinted, trying to make out the person Michael seemed to have already identified. The figure took another step forward and it was Susan’s turn to hold in a gasp.

The woman who had just come out of Michael’s bedroom was the most beautifulwoman Susan had ever set eyes on. She was tall; almost as tall as Michael was. Her flawless, light skin glowed as he took another step forward, her comely hips rolling as she placed one foot in front of the other. Susan felt as though she was looking into the eyes of the type of womanher late grandmother had insisted was a mermaid.“You see this mammy water, thesendem, they are usually very beautiful.” Ma Ete, Susan’s wizened grandmother had alwayssaid whenever a beautiful woman walked past her market stall. Little Susan would swallow a giggle as the woman’s rheumy eyes would follow the object of her suspicion. “They look like ordinary people, but you can see that they shine like the sun- always yellow. Any man that tries to marry one will suffer because the sea is always jealous to lose her daughters. Have you ever tried to look at the ocean when the sun is shining on it? Ehen! That’show they shine. Fear them o.”Susan gaped at the women coming down Michael’s staircase. If she was a superstitious type, she would have believed she was looking at the personification of her late grandmother’s irrational beliefs. Even in the dimness of Michael’s house, the woman glowed, skin as supple and inviting as freshly baked bread.

She was dressed in a white dress-shirt, her creamy thighs flashing beneath the extremely short hem of the dress. Her face was symmetrically perfect, a pointed nose dissecting a flawless face. Her lips were tinged pink and couched in a permanent pout, and they pursed as her dark eyes took in the sight of Michael and Susan at the foot of the stairs. Her long lashes batted slowly as she ran a quick gaze over Susan before returning to Michael.Susan felt a peculiar pain in her heart as the woman’s perfect eyes lighted up as they rested on Michael.

There was no mistaking the pure joy on the beautiful face at the sight of the tall, handsome manwho stood with a stony look on his face.“Michael!” the woman breathed.

Susan wasn’t surprised to hear the perfect voice issue out from between the luscious lips. As the woman stepped down, her red-painted toes curling on the plush mat at the end of the staircase, Susan wondered if the perfect woman wasn’t a walking and talking Barbie doll.

It simply was almost impossible for one person to be that gorgeous.Susan watched, eyes wide as the woman flung herself into Michael’s arms. Surprised, he grabbed her before they could fall, but Susan still felt a pang as she saw his arms go around the beautiful woman.Michael seemed to shudder before he gently disentangled himself from the woman’s embrace and stepped back. His next words caused a small furrow to appear on the prefect brow of the beautifulwoman as she moved back as well.“What the hell are you doing here?”The woman laughed, a small lilting sound like music. “Well, I missed you too, Michael.” She turned her gaze to Susan. “Aren’t you going to introduce me to…. your friend here?”Susan’s brows rose at the woman’s tone. She had put and inflection on ‘friend’ that made it sound unpleasant.Michael’s jaw moved and then he took a deep breath then turned to Susan. In his yes, she saw a range of emotions she could not identify clearly; shock, displeasure and what looked like regret.“Uyai, meet Susan. Susan, this is Uyai, my…wife, who disappeared a year ago.”
