Susan felt her breath lock in her chest as Michael’s words sunk in.Uyai… My wife.

For a moment, she could not speak or move, but only stared at the woman standing before them. Beside her, she could sense Michael turning to look at her,but she could not bring herself to turn to him as well. Blood was roaring in her ears and she felt faint.Am I about to faint? Shethought.

Oh Lord, please, let me not pass out.
When Michael touched her arm gently, shedrew in a sharp breath and realized she had been dizzy because she wasn’t breathing. As he gripped her upper arm, she took in a few more deep breaths, blinking rapidly.“Is your friend asthmatic?” the stunning Uyai asked. Michael’s wife’s words seemed concerned, but her tone was one of ‘I couldn’t care less if she choked to death’. Susan pushed Michael’s hand away as Uyai continued. “Maybe she should go outside for some fresh air…”“She’s fine.” Michael said curtly.
he threw another worried glance at Susan, wondering why she had pushed his hand away; but for a moment he wished he were alone so he could handle the shock of seeing Uyai, the woman who had been the centre of his universe till she disappeared without a word. He knew he was in shock; he could sense it in the detached way his mind perceived everything, but he also knew he had to put Susan first. “She’ll be fine. Don’t worry about her.”“Don’t worry about her?” Uyai responded, the mocking tone in her voice caused Michael to look up sharply. “I find my husband with a strange woman and I should not worry about her?”“The only stranger here is you, Uyai.” Michael said, voice soft yet menacing. “I don’t even understand how you got into my new house.”Uyai smiled, perfect dentition flashing in the dim light of the living room. “I’m your wife, Michael. Why would your mother deny your wife the key to your house? All I had to do was ask.”Michael cursed under his breath. His mother had always been a fan of Uyai’s, convinced he had been the one to send heraway. It made sense that the old woman would receive Uyai with open arms and willingly, his spare key.“What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours ismine, Michael. Remember those vows?” Uyai asked, eyes wide. “This is my house too, my love. You’re mine and I’m yours. Have you already forgotten that I’m totallyyours to do with as you please?”His heart leaped as she flicked her long hair off the side of her neck. He was suddenly reminded of the numerous timeshe had been the one to lovingly shift her hair aside so he could kiss and tease the nape of her perfect neck…Michael shook his head. He could not afford to let Uyai blind him with her beauty.Uyai smiled at Michael as though she knew what he had been thinking. “Oh Michael. I have missed you, husband.”“Did you really?” Michael blurted before hecould stop himself. He stepped away from Susan, moving closer to the woman who had almost broken him. “Are you sure you’re capable of feeling anything under that perfect exterior?”Uyai laughed and moved towards him, quick as a snake. Before he could react, she was pressed against his body again, one soft arm twined around his neck, the other sliding down his taut belly, her lips pressed against his mouth, tongue seeking his in their usual familiar dance.

Michael wrenched her away from him, but not before he felt his body react to the familiarity of his wife’s touch. When he turned to look at Susan, he knew she had seen his reaction.

He knew she had seen his lust for his wife.

She stood there, one arm loosely cupping the side of her face, but her eyes told him her mind was racing. He felt a twinge in his heart ashe recognized the look in her eyes- it was the same look he had seen in the mirror for months after Uyai left him. He knew Susan’s heart was breaking. When he opened his mouth to somehow explain, she interrupted him.“I should go, Michael.” Her voice was calm, betraying nothing of what she was thinking. She turned to Uyai, her heart clenching as she took in the perfection of the woman again. How can you compete against this? Her mind sighed. Just how?“Yes, maybe you should, Miss…er…

I didn’tget your name.” Uyai left the query hanging.“I already introduced her to you.

Stop behaving like you don’t remember.” Michael cut in, reaching for Susan’s hand.

Susan dodged Michael’s arm. “Susan. My name is Susan. Your husband tutors my daughter in Mathematics.”A shadow shifted over Uyai’s face. “Oh. You’re still teaching.”The tension in Michael’s body told Susan his profession was the source of old conflict with Uyai, but she had no intentionof hanging around to listen to them have adomestic spat.“You both need to sort your problems out, Michael.” Susa said, stepping back towards the kitchen through which they had come in.“At least wait let me drop you off.” Michaelsaid. His eyes darted between Uyai and Susan. “Just give me a minute to…”“I’ll take a cab. Or a keke. Don’t worry. Just talk to your… to your wife.”She turned away and left quickly, ignoring Michael as he called after her. Her mind was burning with the image of Uyai in his arms, kissing him, and that split moment when Michael’s arms had tightened around his wife as he responded to the kiss. She needed to leave before she burst into tears.
