Outside, Susan moved quickly, retrieving her bag from the trunk of Michael’s car before flagging down a passing commercial tricycle. She had not entered a ‘keke’ in months, but at that moment, theunkempt rider of the tricycle seemed like an angel sent to take her away from Michael’s home. She would have gladly hopped onto a wheelbarrow just to have some distance between her and the love triangle she had unwittingly entered. She gave the tricycle rider her office address and watched, pensive, as he recklessly hurtled along the streets of Uyo,using back roads to reach her office complex. Her mind was filled with regret. Why had she given in to temptation and made love to Michael the night before? If she had stuck to her ideals concerning married men, she would not have found herself in the mess she was in. she had zero interest in ruining anybody’s marriage, especially after Asuquo’s serial cheating. She would not become ‘the other woman’.By the time she reached her office and poured out her heart to Eka, she felt like she had a better handle on her emotions. Her best friend and business partner was the perfect sounding board for her. Eka’s empathy and levelheadedness quickly helped her set her priorities right.“This whole matter with Michael is very unfortunate, but you know what’s more important right now? Your safety and that of your daughter.” Eka advised, tapping a pen on her office table for emphasis. “We have to handle this issue of your ex-husband and his police friends before Cherish gets back next week.”Susan slumped back in the chair opposite Eka and nodded glumly.

She felt like the direct opposite of her friend. Eka was dressed in a white peplum gown, set off beautifully by her dark chocolate complexion. Her tight bun and light make-up gave her a poised, efficient look which Susan felt she was missing in the simple blue gown she had thrown on in the hotel room that morning. She sighed and pushed her trailing braids off her forehead. She needed to get her life back on track.“The police then?” Eka enquired. “Though I suggest we pick up Ndifreke as we go. I called him last night and told him everything that was going on.”Susan nodded mutely again, relieved to beleaving matters to capable hands. Ndifreke was a brilliant barrister whose services they often used professionally. It would be smart to visit the police station with him in tow.Eka’s expression softened as she noticed Susan’s gloominess. She reached across the table and gripped her friend’s palms. “Oh, Suusuu.” She said, using the pet name which always made her friend smile. “Everything will be fine, you’ll see. Michael is…”“Michael is not an option anymore.” Susan interrupted, unsmiling. “His ‘gawjious’ wife is back.”Eka sighed. “The matter isn’t that cut and dried.”“Only if I choose to let it be so.” Susan insisted, getting up and hoisting her handbag over her shoulder. “I don’t tanglewith married men. He’s married.

So that’s that. Let’s go get Ndifreke and report this matter to the police. Let me control what I can.”** **An hour later, they were walking into the main police headquarters in Uyo. Chatty Barrister Ndifreke had assured Susan and Eka that he would handle the talking and that he expected her to be safe after they had reported the full matter to whatever highest ranking officer was on seat.Susan could feel the barrister’s eyes raking over her body surreptitiously. She knew the young lawyer had a huge crush on her, but she was not in the mood to politely rebuff him; she just hoped he would try none of his usual flirting. The atmosphere in the police station was cool and friendly when they arrived and introduced themselves. As they sat on plastic seats in the small waiting lounge, Susan wondered if the welcoming reception was the norm or just due to Barrister Ndifreke’s presence. He seemed familiar with almost everyone they had met so far, and soon wandered into the inner offices, leaving her and Eka to trade uncomfortable smiles with the officers and other waiting people. Susan kept herself busy by trying to make out the words scribbled in chalk behind the long counter where two policewomen sat.So she was distracted when Barrister Ndifreke returned with two police officers, until they stopped right before her. She looked up and caught her breath as one of the policemen offered her a palm to shake.“Alright, Miss Ekerette. I believe we have been referred to the best here.” The lawyersaid, chest t----t out confidently. “These gentlemen will hear you out and provide as much help as you need. Sirs, these are Miss Susan Ekerette and Miss Eka George. Ladies, these are…”“I know who they are.” Susan breathed, staring at the hand hovering in front of herface. She stared up at the familiar face hovering above hers, a small smile stretching his thin lips as her palm was gripped in a tight handshake. She had literally walked right into the grasp of Inspector Samson Udofia.
