Susan ekerete - Season 1 - Episode 27

☆☆

When Susan walked out of the police station about three hours later, she was still feeling sheepish about how gullible she had been.

Eka occasionally threw her a reproachful look as they slid into her car to drive back to their office, but she avoided her friend’s gaze. She was not yet ready to deal with whatever unspoken annoyance would be visible in Eka’s eyes.Barrister Ndifreke kept up a line of annoying chatter in the backseat of the car, but Susan managed to tune him out until they reached his own office and dropped him off. Then he leaned in through the passenger window and t----t one of his cards into her palm. She wincedwhen he imprisoned her fingers in his sweaty fist in an unwanted handshake.“It’s a good thing this entire matter was settled without any drama, but just in case, Miss Ekerette.” He breathed on her, eyes riveted on the front of her dress. “My services are always available to you…”Susan tugged her hand away, disgust filling her at the intentional double entendre in his words. “Thank you, Barrister. I’ll keep that in mind.”About ten minutes after Eka’s car moved off, she tossed the lawyer’s card out the window with a grimace. Eka threw her a reproachful look.“I know I should stop doing that, but I wonder why he keeps giving me his cards when I have never called him once.

This islike the thirteenth time he has given me one of those…”“What the hell, Susan? How could you let Asuquo use your head like that?” Eka blurted hands tight around her steering wheel.Susan sighed. It was apparent that Eka had only been waiting for the Barrister to alight before addressing what had happened at the police station.“Eka, I don’t even know how it happened. I was so worried about keeping Cherish safe that it didn’t occur to me that her father could be lying….”“It didn’t occur to you that your cheating, pathological liar of an ex-husband could be dishonest?” Eka asked, eyebrow raised.“Seriously, Susan?”“It was such an outrageous claim that I guess I just swallowed it hook, line and sinker.” Susan responded, embarrassmenttwisting in her belly. “Why would someonelie about policemen and say they wanted to kill him?”“Because… Asuquo.” Eka said, voice heavywith sarcasm. She looked away from the road, and sighed. “Well, when you told me the story, I believed it as well. I guess you’re not the only gullible woman seated in this car.”Susan felt a twinge of annoyance at the word ‘gullible’, but she grudgingly accepted that she had been played by Asuquo. At the police station, her reaction at seeing Samson Udofia had given away her paranoia concerning him, and she hadbeen forced to tell everyone that Asuquo had told her the Inspector and his men were trying to kill him because of their shady business deals gone wrong. Samson Udofia had been surprised, but amused and assured her that they were after Asuquo because he had been involved in defrauding a couple of lonely, rich widows.

After she had been presented with evidence to support his claims, he had also confessed that her behaviour the night before had led the police to suspect that she and Michael Davies were workingwith her ex-husband, which was why they approached her house stealthily and were further suspicious when she fled with Michael.Samson Udofia had tried to ease her embarrassment. “It’s okay, miss Ekerette. I guess, as a woman living alone, you wereeasily spooked by the story your ex-husband fed you. But not to worry, further investigation has revealed that youand your boyfriend are not culpable. The full arm of the law is after Mr Asuquo Udodiong and he will be apprehended soon to answer for his crimes.”“Michael Davies is not my boyfriend.” Susan had muttered at once, pushing down the memory of the passionate night they had spent together and the eventful morning which had seen her leave his house with her heart in pieces. “He’s just my daughter’s tutor.”“Well, I’ll take your word for it.” Samson Udofia had smiled at her. “I even daresay that’s news many men like me will be happy to hear.”Susan had been too distressed to react to the policeman’s subtle flirting. She had only wanted to leave the police station andescape the amusement of all the other police personnel who were listening in on the conversation. She was uncomfortable with the idea of being seen as a weak single mother who had let fear override her common sense.“The police will get him.” Eka’s voice brought her musing back to the present. The woman looked away from the road again and flashed Susan a sympathetic smile. “Don’t judge yourself too harshly. Asuquo is a good conman and an accomplished liar with little or no conscience. You know that.”“Yeah, I know.” Susan sighed, leaning back in her seat. “But just look at how much panic he caused and how I made rash decisions that I will regret…”“Don’t do that to yourself, Susan.” Eka cut in. “What happened between you and Michael was not necessarily a bad thing.

You have feelings for him and from how close you both got in the past weeks, I think he has some deep ones for you too. Don’t forget that.”Susan gave her friend a small, grateful smile but in reality she knew what would be hard to forget was how she had felt when she saw Uyai and Michael kiss. They blended so well together; both tall, both breathtakingly good looking. If they had a kid, it would be talking cube of sugar, Susan thought wryly. No, she could not hope to compete with a woman as beautiful as Uyai. The chapter of Michael was closed in her life- a fantasy she had to let go of. It was time to return to reality and face the fact that the father of her daughter was a wanted conman. She wished she could just wake up from the nightmare that had become her life in just a few days.
