Susan ekerete - Season 1 - Episode 28

☆☆

In less than a week, Susan’s life returned to something that resembled what it used to be before Michael Davies entered her life, and then Asuquo breezed in with his deceit. She worked diligently with the police to provide as much information about her ex-husband as she could, but they had been unable to find him. She didn’t expect it to be easy; Asuquo may be dishonest, but it didn’t detract from his charm and intelligence. Susan suspected some entranced new woman of his was probably hiding him away somewhere.Samson Udofia had become a regular part of her life, using the on-going investigation as an excuse to hang aroundher and get to know her better. Plagued with thoughts of Michael and what they had almost had, she had not been encouraging in her attitude towards the policeman. Her hurt was still fresh and she knew rebound relationships were hardly ever wise.Still, the policeman persisted gently and she struggled with how to let him know, in no uncertain terms, that she had zero interest in him. Deep down in her was the irrational distrust of the police that every born-and-bred Nigerian had. Surprisingly enough the person who helped her decide to finally take the bull by the horns was her daughter Cherish.

The little girl was slated to return by the weekend and Susan could hardly wait to see her daughter. She knew having the little girl around would help her forget about her heartbreak. She had ramped up her anticipation with two daily phone callsto her daughter, one while at work and onejust before she went to bed, and the conversations always left her happy.“Mummy, when I come back, will you and daddy pick me up at the airport?” Cherish suddenly broke their usual nightly chit-chat with the sobering question. “My friends say their parents will pick them up.”The question sent a shard of regret through Susan’s heart as she sat up in bed where she had been cuddled up beside Pooh the teddy bear. She had known that following her decision to be separated from her husband, moments like this would arrive when her daughter would have to deal with the reality of the fact that her parents were divorced.“Oh, my darling. I’m not sure he will be there this time. But it doesn’t mean he does not love you or want to see you.” Thewords felt like ash in her mouth, and she hit Pooh remorsefully on his button nose. She was torn between wishing her daughter could still maintain some kind ofamiable relationship with Asuquo and wishing they would never have to see the lying cheat again.“That’s okay, mummy.” Cherish responded, then added in her usual show of maturity. “We’ll keep it all girls and still be okay right?”Tears prickled the back of Susan’s eyes asshe heard the words she often used being parroted back at her. She sq££zed the teddy bear tight and inhaled deeply, finding her daughter’s scent trapped in thefake fur of the plush toy. “Yes, my baby. Just us girls against the world. We will be okay.”When the call ended, with loud kisses and declarations of love, Susan felt loneliness try to push her into depression. The small house was lonely without her daughter and her thoughts naturally drifted to things she had been avoiding on for days.Michael. And his newly returned wife.Susan, curled up in bed, wondered how they were getting on. She had seen chemistry in the brief embrace between husband and wife and she allowed her mind to torture her, filling her head with images of Michael and Uyai twined in the sheets of their nuptial bed, doing the delightful and s£nsu@l things she had done with him that fateful night they had spent together. She pushed the images away and curled tighter around the large teddy bear. She had not spoken to Michael since they last saw; and had refused to pick his incessantphone calls, until he had stopped trying. There was no point torturing herself by hearing his voice. Fate had been unfair to her in the matter of Michael; she wished him well with his wife and only hoped that she could put it all behind her and move on.And that meant no men in her life for now. Not Michael, not her ex-husband and most definitely, not Samson Udofia. She would let him down gently, but she would not delay it any further. It was time to see to herself and her daughter first.** **It was a Friday and Susan was excited. Cherish was to return in the evening and she could hardly wait to see her baby. Themathematics tournament had been a hugesuccess and her daughter and the other selected children were returning from Ghana with the first place trophy for their school. It was bound to be a joyous reunion with lots to celebrate. She whizzed through the early part of her workday in a good mood and everything was going right until her secretary peeped into her office at midday, with an apologetic look on her face.“Someone to see you, madam.”Susan frowned, looking up from the documents on her table. She had no pending appointments and her day was usually tightly planned. “Did I have an appointment I forgot?”“No madam.” Her secretary assured her. Asmall frown of annoyance twisted the chubby woman’s forehead. “There’s definitely no appointment. I tried to turn him away but…”Susan’s eyes widened as the door opened further and someone slipped in behind thesecretary, making the woman gasp in indignation. She stared at the familiar facebeaming a conciliatory smile at her secretary, closed her eyes for a long second and wondered why fate had decided to ruin an almost perfect day. Then she squared her shoulders and ignored the stabbing ache in her heart.“Michael Davies. What the hell are you doing here?”
