The flight from Ghana had been smooth and uneventful. Miss Jennifer Adesina was glad; she was not very fond of being in an aeroplane. Each bump and shudder of the aircraft always had her clutching her chest and mouthing a silent prayer. Her apprehension had made her the butt of jokes from the other two teachers and three children she was travelling with. Cherish was her seat mate and had poked fun at her the entire flight. The general intercom came on with a scratchy sound, and then the pilot announced that they were descending intoAkwa-Ibom State airport. Jennifer muttered a prayer of thanks and then winced as she felt her ears throbbing in protest when the aircraft began its descent. She pressed a palm to her forehead, closed her eyes and groaned.“You’re a scaredy-cat, Miss Jennifer.” Cherish giggled, stockinged legs dangling as she grinned up at her teacher.Jennifer spared the girl a glance, and then closed her eyes again. “My dear, I cannot argue with that. Don’t blame me for being scared please, I believe flying is only right for birds. And I don’t have wings.”Cherish mused over her teacher’s words, then shrugged. “Well, the aeroplane looks like a bird and has two huge wings.” The girl grinned, showing a space in front of her teeth where a shaky tooth had fallen out the night before. “It’s a big robot bird that has you in its tummy.”“Gee thanks for that image. Very reassuring, the thought of being swallowed by a metal bird.” Jennifer muttered wryly.“That’s sarcasm!” Cherish said gleefully. “Mummy taught me what it is.

You don’t really mean what you just said, but you’re only lying to be funny.”Jennifer laughed, and then groaned as herears throbbed again.Cherish noticed the woman touch her earlobe. “I guess your ears hurt like mine does. Here, have some of my chewing gum.

Mrs Benson said it helps.” The girl pointed her chin at one of the teachers, who was seated two rows away.Jennifer shamefacedly collected one stick from the offered pack of chewing gum. She actually had a pack herself, ready for when the plane’s ascent or descent affected her ears, but she had forgotten it in her bag which was in the luggage hold above them. “Thank you, Cherish. Mrs Benson is right; it helps. Chew vigorously till we land.”Their eventual landing was without drama, and when they emerged from the plane, Jennifer almost felt like kissing the ground. She left herding the children to theother two teachers and switched on her phone, trying to reach the parents of the kids. She had gotten through to the parents of two of the students before they left Ghana, but was still having difficulty reaching Cherish’s mother.

She tried again, frustrated when the call refused to connect. She needed to inform Susan Ekerette they had arrived on an afternoon flight instead of an evening flight as originally communicated, so she could come to the airport and pick her daughter up.READFinally! Jennifer sighed and typed a quick text message to Susan as their entourage waited to collect their luggage form the revolving conveyor. Her bag and those of the kids came into view and she hurriedly sent the text message so her hands would be free to grab the bags. She stared crossly at her phone.

What was Mrs Susan Ekerette doing?** **Susan’s phone buzzed again, nestled in the handbag beside her chair. All morning, the mobile network had been poor, so she had practically abandoned the phone, planning to try Miss Jennifer Adesina’s phone number again later in the evening, when she expected the flight from Ghana to have arrived. The call and text messagearrived unnoticed.Susan was busy dealing with a very unwelcome visitor.

Michael Davies stood in the middle of her office, looking like a very appealing addition to the usual décor. Susan stood behind her desk, hands crossed over her chest. The moment her secretary had left the office, she had let her displeasure show at once.READPANIC As Herdsmen INVADE UNN Campus!“How did you even get up here?” Susan asked, eyes wide and jaw clenched. “You shouldn’t even have made it past the ground lobby without a formal invitation…”“I know you aren’t exactly pleased to see me.” Michael interrupted, brow furrowed. “But can we at least be civil?”“Civil?” Susan repeated, letting her voice drip with amazement. “You barge into my office uninvited and expect me to be civil?”It was Michael’s turn to cross his arms over his chest. Susan kept her eyes away from eth way his upper arms flexed and rippled under the sleeves of the blue shirt he had paired with jeans. “I know you to be very polite and tactful, so I’m a bit surprised. This is unlike you, Susan.”Susan refused to let the truth in his words distract her. “Tactful? You’re looking for tact? This from a man who can’t take a hint and not visit a woman who won’t even pick his phone calls?”Michael dropped his arms and took a few quick steps forward, stopping just in front of her table. Startled, she plopped down in her chair and he towered over her, the lines of his handsome face set in stubbornlines. “We need to talk, Susan. And whether you like it or not, we’re having that talk now
