Memories Of Cupid - Season 1 - Episode 65

“So.. Today is the first day of September and you said you would show me the kind of work you do and your kingly duties right?” Elyme asked as she swallowed a mouthful of cereal and looked at him to be sure he would take her out. She had enjoyed herself the previous day when he had taken her and Adriane to see his beautiful kingdom. Hades nodded and continued his meal.

“But what do you do exactly?” she asked him as she took another spoonful of cereal and chewed as she waited for him to answer.

Hades took his time answering. It was as if he was looking for the right words to say. Elyme inclined her head to one side in inquiry when he looked at her.
“Well… Nothing much to say. I am the lord of the realm. A king and I have the ability to control darkness and the shadows and to decide about things related to death. I can choose to release a shade from the underworld and give it another chance to live in the mortal world. Thanatos does the rest”
“Hmm…I see but can you elaborate more?”
“Let’s put it this way. If I want someone to die and for their soul to be separated from the body and for the mortal shell to crumble, I can do that and so can Hermes and Thanatos, my twin brother”
“If Thanatos and I want someone to die, we’ll always look at him and wish him death and immediately, the soul will separate from its body. It can be through heart attack, accident and all of that”
Shivers raced down Elyme’s spine the moment he was done. It was scary and creepy but would she really long to witness that kind of horrible scene with him?
“So it is because of you and your brother people die?”
“Not at all. It is because of the fates’ design that someone dies. They might weave a short pattern of life for that person or they may cut the strings of his life. When that time comes, either Thanatos, Hermes or I am there to separate the soul from the body. I only decide to take away the life of someone on rare cases that leaves me with no choice. Well Thanatos and Hermes are already complaining because they’ve been the one doing the work recently so I just have to resume back not to anger the Fates and also to do my responsibility”
“But how do you know when it’s time for someone to die?”
“Elyme… let’s eat!”
“Please”
“It’s because of the system the Fates created and there’s also a list they deemed for people next to die. I don’t think I should tell you this but there’s also a box in the inner chamber of my room called the Pandora’s box.it is the box the ancient gods gave to the first woman of the earth but somehow somehow is in my possession and it communicates with my spirit to tell me the venue and the person to die. There are some things its best you shouldn’t know about Pandora’s box”
Elyme shrieked and sighed. The death business was making her head ache from its complexity.
Hades pinched the bridge of his nose and beckoned on a nymph to clear the dishes. He asked Elyme if she was ready. She told him to give her few minutes for freshening up.
“I like to take care of special cases and I think they’ve waited for me enough. Am going to show you some of those special cases first” he said once she came out of her room .She changed the style of her hair and changed into a turtleneck sweater and skinny jeans. She probably took the fastest shower on record ever.

“You look beautiful” he remarked. She walked towards him and winked. She wasn’t able to hold off the smile that brightened her face. When she smiled like that, it was just so damned infectious.
“Bye Adriane. See you later” she spoke softly and looked at him.
“Be prepared” he said and moved closer to her. The moment their skin touched, it was like a spark of electricity travelled between them. It was weird and strange. A dark mist enveloped down and she saw nothing else but darkness. There was a brief feeling of weightlessness and then she started to see small shafts of light as the mist began to slowly clear away.

When all the mist was gone, she saw that they seemed to be in some sort of a hospital room, the smell of medications and alcohol lingered in the air. There was also the steady sound of the monitors. There were so many monitors attached that the figure in the bed seemed hidden from it.

Elyme glanced around the room and saw that the walls were painted with pastel colours. Different from the usual black walls she was used to in Hades’ cavern.
“Mom, don’t cry….” a weak voice whispered.

The answer was only another sob from what elyme assumed was the mother. Hades pulled her hand and led her to one corner of the room, away from the bed. He leaned on the wall and crossed his arms over his broad chest. The action caused the muscles in his arms to bulge.

“Can they see and hear us?” she asked.
Hades shook his head.
“Mom, you should not cry.. I told you, there was this man who visited me days ago. He was very tall and fine. He even looked like an angel. He told me to tell you and daddy that you should not worry because I am going to a place where there’s no more sickness. A peaceful place. No more needles, drugs or pain” a little boy’s voice said to his mother.
“His name is Desmond.hes been diagnosed with leukemia. He is six years old and he had had this sickness since he was four. Hospitals and doctors are all he has ever known. Sadly, they weren’t able to find a bone marrow donor for him.”
“Oh my goodness. So you mean he’s going to die today, the first day of September people are celebrating a new month? He’s going to die at the age of six?” she said with tears sprung to her eyes.

“Well, it’s been found that he could be a donor for a little blind boy His corneas are a perfect match. He agreed right away.

The moment he dies, they will take him to the theatre. His death will make a little boy like himself to see the world for the first time” he explained.

Elyme looked way and hastily wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes.

“The moment I saw him on the list, I came to him. I wanted him to prepare his parents. I want him to embrace his death as it comes” he continued in a gentle tone.

“Is this the special cases you are talking about?” she asked him and he slowly nodded.
“One amongst others” he replied.
“What other things did this man tell you?” the mother asked.

“He said that I am going to a very beautiful place and I am going to see smart. He called the place Elysee”
Hades laughed. “Elysium and smart is his dead dog” he whispered to Elyme who just wore a straight face.

“He is a child, innocent and kind” He whispered.
“He also told me to tell you and daddy that you should be good and nice so that you will be in Elysee with me. He said he will accompany me there” the boy explained in a beautiful little tone.
“Mommy, he said you shouldn’t cry too much. We’ll see each other again okay? I love you and I’ll watch over you and daddy from Elysee. Tell daddy to be strong too.” His voice became weaker and weaker while his mother’s sobs became louder.
Elyme heard the beep of the monitors slowing down. It meant that her heart rate was getting lower and lower. Her breathing also began to rasp.

“It’s time” Hades said. He held Elyme’s hand and tugged her over towards the little boy.
For the first time since they arrived. She got to see how the boy really looked like. He was very pale and bruises covered most of his skin. His arms were connected with many tublings and multiple needle pricks were on his skin. He had no hair on his head because of the effects of chemotherapy. His skin had a gray tint to it.
Elyme’s tears were flowing freely now. Hades waved his hand and she felt his power in the air.

“I lifted the invisibility off us” he whispered to her.

The boy looked directly at them and smiled.
“You are pretty” he told her and waved his hands at her. She returned the gesture.
“Mom, the angel is here and there’s a beautiful lady beside him.”
“Is that your wife?” he asked while Hades just smiled. The woman looked around the room confused. She couldn’t see the angel and the pretty wife her boy was talking about. Her sobs began louder.
“Angel, wherever you are, please take care of my little boy for me. I already hold you to your promise that I will see him again” the mother said.
“Say goodbye to her now Desmond. We’re going to Elysium now”
“Mommy.. I love you okay? Help me greet Daddy when he comes. They are going to take me to Elysium now. Goodbye mommy.. I love you” he said. His voice became fainter with each sentence.

Hades stretched his arm an offered it to the little boy. He smiled and lifted his arm. There was a strong feeling of power in the air.
The monitors beeped faster now in alarm.
“Doctor! Doctor!” The mother’s wails got louder and louder.

The moment the boy’s hand touched Hades, a white light erupted. His arm fell limply back to his side. The monitors beeped louder and doctors burst into the room. They checked him and tried to revive him but there was nothing more they could do.

The mother looked at the doctors but they all shook their hands and bowed. The mother wept louder and louder. The father suddenly barged into the room with some provisions in his hand. He had gone to buy his son those stuffs. The touched his son and shook his head.

His only child was gone. Elyme turned her head away as more tears fell from her eyes.

“Watch!” Hades said.
A white light burst from the boy’s chest and a moment later, his spirit rose from his body. His spirit was unlike his mortal shell. He was very handsome and fresh. He had no bruises or needle prick marks. His skin had a healthy silvery-glow to it and he had a huge smile on his face.

He reached over and took Hades’ hand. She reached for Elyme’s too and she offered him. She quickly wiped away her tears for she didn’t want the boy to see her crying.

“What are you waiting for? Aren’t you supposed to take him to surgery so that the little boy can have his eyes?” the father asked.

This spurred the doctors into action.

They quickly moved and removed the monitors.
They wheeled the bed away.

“Thank you for this. Because of your kindness. A little boy will see the world for the first time” a doctor said.

“Please tell the family to take care of my boy’s eyes” The mother sobbed as she chipped in.

“We will. A doctor said and left the room”
“Let’s go prince” Hades said with a huge smile. He bent his body and scooped the boy up in his arms. The mist wove around them once more but this time, it was rainbow-like. He did change the colour so the boy wouldn’t be scared. The boy screamed with glee as he took in the colourful rainbow colours. The mist cleared as they got to Charon and his boat.
