Must Read: Behind The Veil

“Isn’t it his?” Humaira asked Mrs. Animashaun as she and her husband observed it and all the
while Mustafa was right there, silent, his memory telling him stories, stories of years ago.

“I am not sure. But Asmau can confirm it. She and Sadiq had this coded language which no one
else knows that they communicate with, that’s what the diary is written with.” said Mrs.
Animashaun as she gave it to Asmau.
“I am sorry ma. You said only she and Sadiq knew the language?” Humaira asked her. She was
confused because while they were in the plane, Mustafa told her how he read the dairy and how the description of her and the house matched what the writer wrote.

“Yes.” Asmau who was standing replied before her mother could. “It’s a language that the both
of use created and only the two of us could understand it. It’s his diary.” she confirmed.

At that moment Humaira’s gaze fell on Mustafa. She was speechless and he, he seemed lost, like a lost child.

“But he understands the language.” she said while her gaze were still on Mustafa.

“That’s not possible.” Asmau shot in. “There is no way anyone else could possibly understand the language.”
Mr. Animashaun faced Humaira. “And who is this young man again?” referring to Mustafa.

“He is Mustafa. The son of the famous business tycoon; Alhaji Ibrahim.” began Humaira.

Mustafa stood up from his chair.
“He is the one that brought the diary to us. He said during the bomb blast that killed Sadiq he
was there too, he was trying to save his little sister and his parents found the diary there.” she
continued.

Mustafa knelt down in front of Mr. and Mrs. Animashaun. His eyes were wet with tears.
Humaira was standing now, talking as though she was counting the words.

“But……. he told…….. me…… how…. he had been… having this….. strange feeling about the dairy…., that he was somehow drawn to it.” she was standing close to Mustafa, confused as to what was happening.

Mustafa held Mrs. Animashaun’s palm, more tears raining down his face without a sob. Mrs.
Animashaun covered his hand with hers. She had this feeling too, she was a mother and even
though her child were to have been clothed in another body, that motherly spirit in her would
identify her child. She was patient, waiting for him to talk. They were all patient.

“Marmee!” his voice which had been building up to sob said out and shocked the whole house.

“Marmee!” he said again and this time Mrs. Animashaun embraced him. Her eyes were soiled as well.
