Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Twelve

"Where is the girl you got pregnant? I thought you said she was already living with you? How come she is not here?" Roland's mother asked as soon a she entered the room. She was expecting to see Nikki because she has been thinking about her since the day she got the news that her son got a woman pregnant. Roland had called her a few days ago and informed her he got Nikki pregnant. He told her the whole truth of what happened..

Roland's mother had scolded him seriously and said she would personally come to apologize to Nikki and to make things right. She had told Roland to make sure Nikki was well cared for until she arrived.

"Where did she go? Did you send her on an errand? Why would you be sending a pregnant woman around? Or is she cooking in the kitchen? Please call her, tell her your mother is around." The old woman said to Roland who was just looking at her silently. He had rushed to help her with her bag, but that wasn't her concern. She wanted to see Nikki immediately.

"Why are you not talking? Why are you as calm as a dove? Have you committed another offense apart from the one we are trying to settle? Start talking immediately. Where is Nikki?" The old woman was now shouting.

"She no longer lives here. She packed out yesterday." Roland said when he finally found his voice. He was shaking a bit when he was talking to his mother. He knew he was in trouble and there was no way she could explain to his mother the reasons she he sent Nikki away.

"What? Why did she park out? Why did you allow that to happen? The last time I spoke to you, you said she was happy to stay in your house. What then happened that she had to suddenly move out of your apartment?" Roland's mother continues to press on with her endless questions.

"The truth is that I sent her away. Roland said, trying desperately to avoid looking at his mother directly in the face.

"Really? Why? Why did you do such a terrible thing? First, you took advantage of her and the you got her pregnant. She was even sick when you did it and then she moved into your house and you had the audacity to ask her to leave?

Was that how I raised you? I thought I raised a responsible human being. I was thinking you grew into a responsible man, but apparently, I was wrong. Now, tell me, why did you ask her to leave?" She asked.

"I lost my job because of her. She reported me to my boss and I was sacked. That's wickedness. Even when I had explained to her that I got her pregnant for her own good, but she still reported to the authorities. Now, I don't have a job and there's no money to care for her. There was no other option than to let her go." Roland responded, hoping that what she said would convince his mother. The old woman was not convinced. In fact, she got angrier and slapped Roland.

"Shut that thing you call mouth. Look at pot calling the kettle black. You opened your mouth to talk of wickedness. Between you and Nikki, who is more wicked? You got her pregnant without permission. That is a crime. If I were to be Nikki, I would have arrested you long ago. By now, you will be enjoying yourself in jail. But it is not too late to lock you up. It can still be done if you misbehave. I will make sure I do it myself. "The old woman threatened. She was very serious and as she talked, she was wagging her finger at Roland who at that time got scared.

"I don't even have food at home and you are busy talking about Nikki. How am I supposed to feed her if I don't have a job? She made me lose my job. I couldn't face her." Roland said, trying his best to defend himself, but it was not working because his mother did not buy anything he said.

"I don't want to hear anything else from you. Now, go out there and look for Nikki. When you find her, bring her back into the house. I don't care how you are going to do it, but you better not return to this house without Nikki. If you return to this house without her, I will personally call the police and have you locked up." The old woman ordered. Roland knows that his mother was not joking. What she was saying was not a threat, she could do it. So, he quietly left the room, thinking of how he would locate Nikki who did not tell him where she was going.

He rode his bike out and entered the major expressway and something told him to go to the hospital and check for Nikki. It has been 24 hours since she left and she has always said she wouldn't go back to her parents' house. Also, Roland doesn't know anything about Nikki's friends, so there was no one to contact. He has her phone number but it was not connecting when he dialed it.

He rode his bike into the hospital even though he had been warned to stay away from there. He went straight to Dr Mark's office.

"I didn't respond to the allegations against me the other day. I was not sure what to say. However, today, I'm here to confess and ask for forgiveness. I brought shame to the hospital and I didn't deserve to remain here as a staff. Please forgive me. However, the major problem now is that Nikki is missing and I need help in finding her. Did she come here or have you heard from her since I was sacked? Please help me, I don't want anything to happen to her or the babies." Roland pleaded with Dr Mark.

"Nikki is in the hospital to abort the babies. We tried to stop her but she insisted on abortion. She said her husband chased her out and you also asked her to leave your house. She had no one to turn to. Well, if you rush to the nursing area, you might still meet her. And if you are lucky, you will still meet her with the pregnancy." Dr Mark said.

Roland rushed out of the office and headed to the nursing area. When he got there, he saw Nikki as she was already entering the ward after discussing with the nurses.

"Leave her alone. She is not here for abortion." Roland said to the nurses who was leading Nikki into the ward.

"Don't listen to him. I don't know him. He is a mad man." Nikki said. She was in emotional pain and she feels abandoned.

"Nikki, you can't do this. You can't terminate the babies. You can't just go ahead with this. There must be another way out of this." Roland said. He was breathing very fast as he was trying desperately to convince Nikki.

"You abandoned me. My husband abandoned me. I'm on my own and yes, there's no other way to handle this. I want to rest." Nikki said as she entered the hospital ward.

"Nikki come out from that ward. Come out because I won't allow you do this." Roland said but he was now speaking through the window as the nurses had locked the door.

"Nikki, it is now a matter of life and death. My mother has threatened to arrest me if anything happens to you or the babies. Please, save me from going to jail." Roland said. When Nikki heard about Roland's mother, she asked the nurses to wait.

"What did you say?" Nikki asked.

"My mother is at home waiting for you. She wants to see you and I'm finished if I don't bring you back with me." Roland said tearfully. Nikki voluntarily came out of the hospital ward and followed Roland to where he parked his bike. The nurses watched as the two of them rode out of the hospital.
