{ BUSY NIGHT }

“What? Are you okay?” Robert questioned.

“Come on, handsome. Think about it. We can’t just sit back and do nothing.”

“Yes, we can. And that is exactly what we are going to do. Do you know the consequences of doing what you are suggesting?” He asked.

“What could possibly happen, huh?” She rolled her eyes.

Emma hasn’t said a word and that drew Robert and Ginny’s attention to her.

“See? She is considering my suggestion.” Ginny pointed out.

Robert squinted his eyes at his partner, watching her closely.

“Wait, don’t tell me you are really considering what she just said.”

“Think about it, Robert. Don’t you think it’s a good idea?”

“Thank you! At least someone agrees with me.”

Robert’s eyes went wide.

“Emma! Are you kidding me right now?”

“Listen to me, Rob. Just as she said, it would be an undercover mission. No one will know about it aside from you, me, the spoilt brat, and Abby.”

“Hold on a second,” Ginny raised her palm, indicating Emma to stop talking. “Who did you call a spoilt brat?”

“Who else is a spoilt brat here?” Emma fired.

“I am not a spoilt brat, you old woman!”

“Old… Old woman? I am only twenty-three years old, you little bitch!” Emma retorted.

Robert shook his head at both girls, watching them argue and insult each other.

After a while, they returned their gazes back to him.

“As I was saying, I think her plan makes a lot of sense.” Emma cleared up her throat.

“Father won’t know and neither will the team who are now handling the case know. And just as she said,” Ginny nodded her head at Emma. “It will be between you, me, her, and Abby. Wait, who is Abby?”

“My best friend. Now shut up and let’s hear what he has to say.”

Emma and Ginny stared at Robert, patiently waiting for him to agree to their stupid and reckless plan.

He let out a deep breath.

“This might get us into deep shit if being caught. You know that, Emma. And I don’t need to remind you that our punishment will be 100 times worse than Ginny’s.”

“I know. It is the more reason why it will be an undercover mission. No one is going to find out anything.”

“And how are we going to do the investigation? Two different teams of detectives can’t interrogate one hospital, remember?”

“Ugh, come on, Handsome. Do I need to explain to you what undercover means?”

He shot her a ha-rd glare and she quickly kept quiet.

“We are going to go in disguise to the hospital. And secondly, we will subtly get new information from team 1 whenever we notice that they have acquired one and are one step ahead of us.” Emma explained.

“Why does it feel like you’ve had this idea in your mind before I brought it up?” Ginny narrowed her eyes at Emma.

“Maybe because I truly did.”

“Wow. You are just as daring as I am. Good for you.”

“Idiot,” Emma mumbled, rolling her eyes. “So, Robert. Are you in?”

“Do I have a choice?”

“No.” She smirked. “Anyway, here is the plan…”

“Wait, before you go on with your plan,” Robert interrupted. “if we catch the murderer before team 1, what are we going to do?”

“We will simply anonymously tip the team off. No one will suspect a thing, trust me.”

•••••

“Hey, don’t you dare call my brother names.”

“Are you serious right now? You just told me that your brother suspect me of killing patients in the hospital and what, you expect me to keep quiet and not insult him?” Her husband snapped.

“I immensely warned him never to say ill things about you, darling. Listen, I love you so much and I am ready to do anything for your sake but then again, it is my brother we are talking about here.”

“So? You’ve always supported me against him, what’s the difference now? Why are you painting me to be the bad guy now?”

“I am not painting you to be the bad guy, Marshall. I just want you to understand where I’m coming from. Jersey is my brother.”

Marshall shoved his hands inside his pants pocket, glaring at his wife.

“And I am your what?”

“Really?” She frowned at him.

“You know what, do as you please. I don’t care.” He attempted to walk away from her but she caught hold of his wrist. “What?”

“Babe, I’m sorry.”

“You are sorry?” He scoffed. “What are you apologizing for?”

She wet her lips, stepping close to her husband.

“For defending Jersey. You are my husband and you should always come first before anybody.” She muttered, stroking her thumb finger over his wrist.

His lips stretched into a smile and he wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I’ve always wanted to be the director of Santos Hospital but since it is Jersey’s birthright, I decided to back away and let him in on the position. But believe me, I will never hurt an innocent soul just because of that.” He dropped a light kiss on her lips. “No one knows that I am even related to Jersey or the Hart family and I want it to be that way, you know.”

“Why? If they don’t know about that then they won’t respect you.” She reasoned with him.

“I can earn their respect without using the name of your family to acquire it, okay?” He told her.

“Marshall, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to get you a higher position other than being a mere doctor at the hospital. You deserve more.”

“Yes, I deserve more and that is why I have you.” He smashed his lips on hers and she instantly responded.

‘Jersey suspect me for the murders going on. Oh f**k, what do I do? No one must know about my relationship with Sandra and also, no one must know that Sandra was the suspicious person that dropped by that night in the hospital. If she loses, I am going to lose too. I can’t let that happen. I have come too far to lose or give up.’ Marshall thought to himself, deepening the hot and passionate kiss.

•••••

“Hello?”

“Darling, how are you?” Sandra asked from the other line.

“I’m fine, babe.” Marshall looked around, just to be sure he was alone and nobody was eavesdropping on his conversation. “Why did you call?”

“I can’t sleep…”

“Why not?”

“You know why.” She groaned.

“Ugh, I thought I told you not to bother yourself about what is going on, huh?”

“How do you expect me to be calm and not bothered? Didn’t you see how Thelma was rude and disrespectful to me? She feels superior now because she knows my secret.”

“I will tame Thelma and trust me, she won’t be a problem to us.”

“But_”

“Do you trust me?” He cut her off.

Sandra hesitated for a few seconds.

“Yes, I do.”

“Then believe me when I say I’ve got everything under control. Okay?”

“Okay. I’m sorry for pestering you by this time of the night.”

“No, it’s fine. Anything for my baby.” He surveyed his surroundings again.

“I love you and goodnight.”

“I love you too. Goodnight.”

The line disconnected as Sandra hung up the call.

Marshall heaved out a deep sigh, ruffling his hair.

Things are not going as planned for him and it is driving him crazy.

Cheating on his wife was one thing and being caught was another whole thing.

He loves his wife, though but Sandra is another woman in his life that he truly cares about.

Actually, he married Felicia because of her family’s wealth which he doesn’t regret doing. And as for Sandra, he really loves her because she is a beautiful and independent woman.

Marshall was a greedy and selfish man and he doesn’t give a shit about what others think about it.

It was his life anyway and he gets to decide what to do with it.

“Honey, what are you doing out here?” Felicia’s voice interrupted his train of thought from behind, startling him a little bit.

“F**k. You scared me.” He hissed.

“I’m sorry.” She apologized, placing her palm on his back. “You haven’t answered my questions yet. Why are you here by this time?”

“I uhm, I came out here to answer a phone call and receive fresh air.” He answered.

“You are lying.” She blurted out.

Marshall pinched his brows together, giving her a surprised look.

Did she overhear his conversation with Sandra?

How much did she hear?

“You are thinking about the situation at the hospital, aren’t you?” She continued, standing by his side. “I heard your patient was the victim.”

‘Oh, thank goodness. She didn’t hear anything.’ He said in his mind, letting out a deep breath of relief.

“You know,” He encircled his arms around her waist from behind and dropped his chin on her shoulder. “I feel really bad.”

“I know. You lost a patient and then my brother suspects you for it.” She sighed.

“Hmm. But you trust me, right?” He pressed a soft kiss on her neck. “You know I will never hurt a human being.”

“Of course, you won’t.” She turned around in his arms and faced him. “I trust you so much, honey and I know for sure that you will never hurt a fly talk more of a human being. Jersey played dirty in accusing you of that. That reminds me, does he treat you badly in the hospital?”

“Not really…” He shook his head. “He treats me like the rest of my colleagues and he always listens to me. I’m even surprised he’s not being a dîck to me. I mean, not after our conflicts.”

“Are you sure you aren’t covering up for him?”

“Nah, I’m not.” He replied, pecking her forehead. “Why are you even still awake?”

“I was until I woke up and didn’t find you in bed.” She pouted.

“I’m sorry for making you worried, hun. Let’s go to bed now.”

“Yeah, let’s do that.”

They walked hand in hand back into the house.

•••••

“Abby, where are you?” Emma worriedly asked.

“I’m sorry babe but I won’t be coming back home tonight.”

“Really? Why not?”

“I have a night shift.”

“And you are just telling me? Seriously?”

“I’m sorry. Where are you?”

“Where else will I be by this time?” Emma scoffed.

“Are you mad at me?”

“Of course, I am.” She let out a soft groan and plopped onto the couch. “You should have told me earlier that you weren’t coming back home tonight. I was worried sick while waiting for your return.”

“I’m sorry…” Abby apologized for the third time. Her voice made it noticeable that she was stressed and tired. “I should have called earlier but I was so busy.”

“Hmm. You need to be careful, okay? The hospital isn’t safe anymore. Or maybe I should come over to protect you.”

“What?” Abigail chuckled. “You don’t have to do that, babe. I’m fine.”

“A murderer is on the loose in the hospital. I don’t think I can feel less worried knowing that.”

“I will be fine. You don’t have to worry about me.” She reassured her best friend for the umpteenth time.

“If I don’t worry about you then who will?” Emma scoffed. “Anyway, if you notice anything unusual, call me immediately. You hear me?”

“I will.”

“Good. And uhm, I have something to tell you.”

“You do? What is it?”

“We will discuss it some other time.”

“Okay. I also have something to tell you,”

“We will talk tomorrow when you return home.”

“Yeah. Bye. I love you.”

“I love you too, babes!” Emma responded and hung up the call, releasing a breath as she leaned back into the couch, closing her eyes. “She will be fine. Abby is a strong and brave girl. She will be fine.”

•••••

Abigail dropped her phone inside her white doctor’s coat and stepped out of the office.

She strode into the elevator and pressed the lower floor, crossing her arms over her chest as the ride began.

After a few minutes, the ride ended and she walked out of the elevator.

She was met with an awful scene.

Injured people littered around the emergency room. More wounded people were trooping into the large room, whimpering and crying in pain.

Abby rushed to one of the nurses who was already attending to a little child.

“What is going on?” She asked.

“Dr. Abby,” The nurse gasped out. “I didn’t know you were on shift tonight.”

“Well, now you know. What is going on?” Abby repeated.

“A bus got into an accident. They are all the passengers.” She gestured at the wounded people.

“What?” Abby looked around again. “How many doctors are on duty?”

“Eleven, I guess.”

“Where are they now?”

“Someone has gone to call out to them. They will be here in any minute.” She replied.

“How is the child? Anything serious?”

The nurse shook her head. “Luckily, He has no serious wound other than a scratch.”

“What about his mother? Father? Anybody that might be related to him?”

“His mother and senior sister were with him on the bus. The mother should be somewhere…” The nurse squinted her eyes as she glanced around.

“Dr. Abby!” A voice cut through, interrupting them.

“Nurse Cora,” Abby called out. “What is it?”

“Please you need to come with me right now.” Cora answered, looking frightened.

Doctors stepped out of the elevator and quickly joined in the scene, attending to the injured passengers.

“Nurse,” Abby said to the other nurse who was attending to the little boy. “I will be right back.”

“Okay, doc.”

“Let’s go, Nurse Cora.”

They both rushed towards a single bed that was occupied by a teenage girl.

The girl was lying unconsciously on the bed. Her white shirt was soaked with blood and she had a huge cut from her temple down to her chin.

“Her name is Anna and she is eighteen years old. She is one of the passengers who got into the accident. She was with her brother and mother.”

‘She must be the sister of the little boy.’ Abby thought to herself.

“So where is her mother?”

“She is somewhere around, getting attended to.” Cora answered.

“Let me check her heartbeat,” Abigail pulled off the stethoscope hung over her neck and checked the girl’s heartbeat.

It was beating faintly and unstable.

“The cut is deep.” Abby muttered, staring at it. “She needs to undergo surgery. But she has wasted a lot of blood. What is her blood group?”

“AB.”

“Go to the blood banks and check if we have any blood that could match hers. Hurry up.”

“Okay, ma.” Cora walked away.

Abby took out her phone and dialed Jersey’s number.

He answered the call almost immediately.

“Hello?”

“Hello, sir. Please are you in the office?” She asked.

“Yes. Is there a problem? Why is it lousy in the background.”

“You need to come down, sir. There is someone who needs to undergo surgery.” She told him.

“I will be right there.”

•••••

A < A FEW HOURS LATER>

“Good Job, everyone.” Jersey commended as he stepped back from the body that they had just operated on.

“Thank you, sir.” They all replied.

He walked out of the operating room alongside Abby while two nurses rode the unconscious girl on a stretcher out of the room and to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) where she can be monitored because her condition was still unstable.

“Good job, sir.” Abby said to her director.

“Good job to you too. Are you okay?” He asked.

“Yes, sir.” She smiled.

They took off their gloves and rinsed their hands before finally stepping out of the operating room.

“You need rest, Dr. Abby.”

“I’m fine, sir. If there is anyone who needs rest then it should be you.” She told him.

“Hmm.” He ruffled his hair and walked away while Abby went back to treating more injured people.

•••••

“Oh, my gosh! What happened to you?” Emma gasped, ushering her best friend into the house.

“What do you mean?” Abby yawned, tirelessly.

“You look like a ghost. Did you even sleep at all?”

“Honestly, I didn’t. We had a very busy night.” She yawned again, dropping to the couch. “I’m so tired.”

“I will brew you a cup of coffee and order food while you go and have a soothing shower, okay?”

“That’s a good idea.” Abigail agreed as she rose to her feet, staggering back a little bit.

“What do you want for breakfast?”

“Anything. As long as it is food.” She stated and went upstairs to her bedroom.

Emma grabbed her phone and scrolled through a five-star restaurant’s site to place an order.

•••••

“Hello?”

“Hey, Emma. How are you?”

“I’m good. Good morning,”

“Good morning,” Robert replied.

“Uhm, I called to inform you that I will be late to work.”

“Why? Are you sick? Is Abby alright?”

“Calm down, Rob. I’m not sick and as for Abby, she’s alright but just stressed. She is just returning home from work.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. She had a night duty and it seemed to be a very busy one. Are you already at work?”

“On my way.” He simply answered.

“I see.”

“You can take a day off from work if_”

“No.” She cut him off. “I will be there soon. I just want to make sure that Abby is completely fine.”

“Alright. See you later.”

“Hmm.”

She hung up the call and dropped her phone on the countertop.

Just then, Abby descended the stairs, dressed in a pink floral print dress.

Her blonde hair was pulled up into a ponytail and she was looking quite presentable compare to when she returned home from work.

She yawned once again and sat down on the island stool, propping her elbows onto the table and placing her chin on her palm.

She gazed at Emma who was dishing out the food that she ordered from a restaurant. She has microwaved it.

“The food smells great.” Abby commented.

“I ordered it from your favorite restaurant.”

“Really? Thank you, baby!”

“You’re welcome, love.” Emma places a plate of spaghetti, hot sauce, and crab in front of Abby. “Bon appetite.”

“Thank you. But how do you know I was craving spaghetti and crab?”

“Don’t you know we are connected somehow? Our telepathy is getting strong.” Emma said jokingly as she winked.

“I can see that. What about you? Are you not going to eat?”

“Nah. I’m not hungry.” She sat down on the next stool beside her friend. “So, how busy was your night?”

“Twenty passengers got into an accident. Most of them were severely injured but there are the lucky ones who only had minor scratches and there are the unlucky ones who underwent surgery.” Abby explained as she shove a spoonful of spaghetti into her mouth and munched carefully.

“Oh, no.” Emma muttered, feeling sorry for the forty passengers she knows nothing about. “Hope no one died?”

“Five died instantly while four died on the way to the hospital.” Abby informed.

“I feel so sad for the poor passengers. How the hell did the accident happen?”

“I don’t know. But I’m sure it is on the news.”

“Hmm. Anyway, you said you want to tell me something,”

Abigail nodded her head. “Yes. You too.”

“Yeah…But how about you go first and I go next,” Emma suggested.

“Good idea.” Abby gulped water and cleared up her throat before facing Emma. “I think Sandra has something to do with the murder.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Because I overheard them talking.”

“Them, you mean?”

“Sandra, Marshall, and Thelma.”

“And how does them talking have to do with the murder?”

Abby hesitated. “Sandra dropped by the hospital the night Tara died. And Thelma caught her.”

Emma furrowed her brows. “Wait, does this mean that the suspicious person Thelma talked about was Sandra? Abby, tell me everything you heard them talking about. Don’t leave any information out.”
