{ I KNOW THE TRUTH }

A black Benz drove into a big compound and parked in the garage.

Jersey stepped out of the car, looking very depleted and stressed out.

His necktie was slightly loosened, his hair was in a complete mess and he has dark circles under his eyes and that’s because he didn’t sleep a wink last night. In other words, his physical appearance was nothing to write home about.

Jersey dangled his suit jacket in one arm as he walked towards the front door, hanging his head low.

He already planned out everything he wants to do by the time he enters the house.

One, have a long and soothing shower.

Two, eat delicious homemade food.

And lastly, sleep until in the evening when he will have no choice but to go back to work.

Jersey was about to open the door when someone else from inside the house beat him to it.

The door opened and his brother-in-law, Marshall strode out, his hand buried inside his pants pocket.

They both glared at each other for what seemed like hours when it was only for a few seconds until Jersey decided to break the eye contact. He was about to walk away when Marshall said something, bringing his movement to a halt.

“We need to talk,”

Jersey raised a questioning brow.

“What did you just say?”

“I said we need to talk.” He repeated.

“I don’t get it. What do we possibly have to talk about, Marshall? Come to think of it,” He checked the time on his wristwatch. “shouldn’t you be at work right now?”

Marshall scoffed as he rolled his eyes.

“Your parents asked me to come over. Who am I to refuse them?” He asked the rhetorical question.

“Listen, I am tired and I do not have the strength to banter words with you. Let’s talk when I am in the right state of mind.” Jersey tried to walk away once again but Marshall quickly stood in front of him, blocking his path. “What are you doing?”

“We are going to have the conversation right now, Jersey.” He said in a stern voice.

Jersey rubbed the stubble under his chin as he thought of ways to end the life of the man standing in front of him right that moment.

“What exactly is your problem?” Jersey snapped. “Are you daft or what?”

“Excuse me? Are you talking to me?” Marshall questioned whilst looking around as if there was someone else with them and maybe Jersey was talking to the person instead.

But it turned out that they were the only ones there.

“I said I am f**king tired and need to rest. What part of it do you not understand?”

“And I said we need to talk.”

Jersey narrowed his eyes a little bit. “Talk about what specifically?”

“About what you discussed with your sister!”

An uncomfortable silence fell between the both of them.

Jersey gritted his teeth without saying anything while Marshall shot daggers at him through his eyes.

“You suddenly lost your voice? You can’t talk again?” Marshall taunted.

“Is that why you are blocking my path?” Jersey asked in a calm tone now.

“Huh?”

“Do you want to have a fight with me because I told Felicia my mind?”

“You told Felicia your mind,” Marshall repeated with a snort. “You f**king accused me of killing my own patient and you see nothing wrong about that?”

“I don’t trust you, Marshall. Maybe we have tried to tolerate each other and pretend not to know each other in the hospital these years but nothing changes the fact that you are jealous of me.”

“Jealous of you?” He snickered, shaking his head. “Think again, Jersey. I don’t give a fk about you or what you own. Your life is none of my fking business!”

“Why did you kill the child?” Jersey asked.

Marshall’s face hardened and he balled his fist in anger.

“Don’t you dare, Jersey. I didn’t kill anybody.”

“I know about your hate for Dr. Abby and sometimes I wonder what the girl did to you to warrant such hatred from you.”

“Are you now monitoring me and my affairs?”

“I am the director of Santos Hospital. If I don’t monitor the affairs of the doctors working for me, who will?”

Marshall took a step close to Jersey, closing the distance between the two of them.

“What are you driving at?”

“Why are Dr. Abby’s patients the murderer’s target? It happened two years ago and now, it is repeating itself.”

“Point of correction… It was my patient who died this time around and not Dr. Abby. Why are you even so concerned about her? Are you f**king her?”

“What?”

“Dr. Abby is beautiful, nice, and loved by almost everybody in the hospital. It is normal for you to feel tempted by her, you know. I won’t even be surprised if you are fking her actually because truth be told, I see that girl as a bitch who pretends to be a saint. So tell me, are you fking her?”

Jersey groaned angrily and grabbed Marshall’s collar, bringing his face closer – Their faces were a few inches away from each other.

“Don’t you ever look down on Dr. Abby again, you f**king parasite.” Jersey pushed him away and strolled into the house at the same time Felicia was stepping out.

They both didn’t say a word to each other.

Felicia shut the door and was surprised to see her husband still standing in front of the door.

“Honey, are you still here? I thought you already left for_”

“Arrgh!” Marshall screamed, ruffling his hair as he released angry breaths through his nose and mouth.

Felicia was a bit taken aback as she wasn’t expecting such a reaction from him.

“Babe, what is wrong?” She suddenly remembered that she walked past Jersey when coming out of the house. And her brother looked quite angry as well just like her husband. Does that mean… “What did Jersey do this time around? What did he say to you?” She asked.

Marshall glanced at her.

“I. Hate. Your. Brother.” With that said, he turned around and left.

He entered his car and drove out of the compound without sparing his wife another glance.

“JERSEY, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?” Felicia said at the top of her lungs, going back inside to query her brother.

“Are you sure of what you just said?” Emma asked for the umpteenth time.

“What? Do you think I will make them up?”

“Of course not. I wouldn’t dare think that but wait a minute, does this mean that Sandra was the suspicious doctor who dropped by the hospital dressed in all-black attire? And why didn’t Thelma mention her name? Why did she lie about not seeing the intruder’s face?”

“Is that even a question? It’s obvious Marshall and Sandra asked her to keep quiet about it.” Abby replied, taking a sip of orange juice.

“I’m kinda not surprised to find out that the nurse lied to me. I knew she was hiding something when explaining that day because her story just didn’t add up at all. Anyway, did you record the whole conversation on your phone?”

“I’m sorry but I didn’t.”

“Shit. Why not?”

“I left my phone in my office. I didn’t know I would overhear them talking and then learn a piece of information.” She sighed. “But I’ve been thinking…”

“Thinking about what?”

“Did Sandra really kill Tara? I mean, why would she even do that? What did the little girl possibly do to deserve death? It makes no sense, right? Because it will be crazy if she actually killed Tara because of her hate for me. Besides, Tara wasn’t my patient but Marshall’s and_”

“Calm down, babe.” Emma interrupted, reaching out to hold her friend’s hand.

Abby let out a soft breath, biting her lower lip. “I’m just wondering what these dead patients did to the damn killer.”

“Well, we just have to investigate, I guess. Speaking of investigation,” Emma paused. “I have something to tell you.”

“Oh, yeah. That’s right, you have something to tell me as well. I’m all ears. What is it?”

It was silent for a few moments.

“The case has been given to another team.”

Abby pinched her brows together, looking a little bit confused.

“I don’t get it. You will be handling the case with another team. Is that what you are trying to say?”

“Not exactly. Mr. Hart told our chief executive officer to take the case away from us and give it to another team. I’m sure you know who Mr. Hart is.” Abby slowly and quietly nodded her head. “Apparently, the case is no longer handled by my team and me but is now handled by Team 1.” She explained, avoiding Abby’s gaze.

“Look at me.”

“Huh?” She still didn’t look at her friend.

Abby carefully pushed the plate of spaghetti away, turning completely to face Emma.

“Look at me, Emma.” She reiterated.

“Abby,” Emma eventually met Abby’s gaze.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier? Why are you just telling me this now?”

“I was going to tell you last night but guess who didn’t come back home last night?” Emma rolled her eyes.

“I was busy with work.”

“Exactly my point. How was I going to tell you about anything when you were busy?”

“So what is going to happen then? I am really determined to work on this case but if you are not the one handling it, how can I?” Abby lowered her gaze, fiddling with her fingers.

“Well, you can still work on the case if you want.”

Abigail raised her gaze to look at her best friend, raising a questioning brow at her.

“What do you mean? Didn’t you just say that your team is no longer the one handling the case?”

“Yeah, I did. However, my team and I are willing to, uh, work on the case in undercover.” She muttered.

“What? Can you guys do that?”

“Mm-hmm. We simply don’t have to get caught.”

“And what if we get caught, what happens?” Abby questioned.

Emma has thought of the consequences if they all get caught working on the case without the knowledge of their boss. It definitely won’t end well for them. They might get suspended for it and if Mr. Hart decides to press charges for it, the aftermath will be much worse.

Emma cli-cked her tongue as she rose to her feet. “I hope we don’t, Abby.”
